Bah humbug... all this talk that tefl is a farce?! Well, reading said thread i guess it kind of is. However, i'm sure that if tefl were heavily regulated and sewn up tighter than a... hmm, we'd be moaning about that.

So, what are the benefits of it being a 'farce'?

The social life?
The easiest foot in the door imaginable?
Collecting passports/stamps on passports?

Not needing to know the local language to teach your own. (recommended, of course, but not required)

In some cases, no degree is even needed.

In some cases, getting your airfare and housing totally paid for.

Sightseeing options galore.

For Americans, getting up to $80,000 tax free earnings possible.

Having more fun than anyone should have at a normal job

dating ss (if you're into that sort of thing)

flexible hours

depending on where you're employed, not necessarily having to dress up
(If you're "teaching" over the internet with no webcam, not necessarily having to get dressed at all Shocked )

Getting to act like an organ grinder's monkey and getting paid for it Laughing

And No!

We met at a Bible Study. Mr. Twisting was never one of my ss. However, One of my parents was the other one's student. Guess who? And who?

Your father was your mother's teacher?

My wife was the second private student I taught after arriving in Mexico. Her brother, now my brother-in-law, or 'shaggy' as we call him, was my first student.

You got it! Yes, my Mom was my Dad's music student at a small university where my dad taught for 50 years. So when people agonize over the ethics of dating ss or not, I feel kinda like, well, gee, I wouldn't BE HERE, if my Dad hadn't dated my Mom who was HIS student. LOL
