I work for Interac now. I don't think the work conditions are bad. My hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. I have two weeks off now for Christmas/New Year's - a lengthy vacation that people who work for JET or through sister programs usually don't have. The drawback is that Interac employees are paid at 75 percent of regular pay for the month of December because of the vacation. We also have the whole month of August off, but that is paid at 60 percent of regular pay. There are plenty of people who will tell you this is a scam, but I think it is a matter of opinion. Pretty much, if you work for Interac, when the kids aren't at school, you don't have to be there either. If you work for JET, you have to go to school when the kids aren't there, even if it just means reading a book at your desk all day. You'll be rewarded financially for reading that book all day tho - so it is up to you. Interac pays 250,000 Yen per month where I am.
Is the job interesting? That depends on you. It is the same work that you would be doing for JET or sister city/state programs. Do you like English? Do you like teaching? I think the job is tons of fun, but others find it boring. Interac teachers generally teach about 3 classes per day, out of a 6 period day. So some people are bored out of their minds, and others find ways to keep busy. You can help out with club activities after school to fill some of the time, and I think that is a lot of fun. The kids love it when the ALTs help out with their sports, orchestra, etc.
