Am coming over to check out the job situation in a couple of weeks. I probably will not get out of the airport until at least 11:00 PM and likely later. Does anyone have any recomendations as to a hotel in Taoyuan? We do not need anything fancy. Someplace that is reasonably clean, quiet and cheap. A shared bath is OK. Close to the train or bus station would be nice as we head to Taichung the next day.

Also, has anyone heard of any jobs in Puli? I have a free place to stay but I do not know about the work situation there.

One more thing: how about some recomendations for hot springs. Gotta have some fun, you know. Not those fancy places where they pipe the water into a bathtub but something outside and cheap.

You are aware that the airport is not actually in Taoyuan city right? It's about 30 minutes outside of it in the county. However, you did say you wanted to be close to the train station. I know of one good hotel pretty much right next to the train station. It's called Nestle hotel. Rooms there about 800 a night or so. It's very clean and quiet. There are other hotels in the area. Some are very cheap (as low as 500 a night), but they are dirty and seedy (used mostly for prostitution). Getting to Nestle is easy. When you are right in front of the station, facing the station, you will see an alley to your right. Walk down it a little way and you will see it. Also, you are going to want to prepare yourself for the taxi ride and getting the room. I don't know if you can speak Chinese or not. Most people you will encounter will not be able to speak English. I suggest you locate the traditional Chinese characters for Taoyuan and train station so you can show them to the taxi driver.

Thanks for the tip. Have been to Taiwan before so not a problem getting around.

You wouldn't happen to know their phone #, would you? My friend speaks Mandarin so she can make reservations. At this time of the year, do I even need to worry about reservations?

Got any info on jobs in Puli or good hot springs to visit?

Sorry, I don't have their phone number. I just remember them from when I first got here. Reservations likely are not necessary. Taoyuan isn't a tourist haven, by any stretch of the imagination. I am a little concerned about your timing though. You're going to hit Chinese new year and everything will shut down during that time. Finding work will be hard. Could you arrive just after Chinese New year instead of just ahead of it? You might not like the couple weeks of inactivity, due to the looming holiday, and the financial consequences that might bring with it.

Sorry no tips on Puli. Not sure I've ever even visited there.

The hot springs in Bei Tou (Taipei county) and Yangming mountain (also in Taipei) should be worth checking out. Both are pretty easily accessed using transit in Taipei.

OK. That is good info.

This trip is only to check things out. I got a super cheap ticket and a Mandarin friend to translate for me so why not? If there is work in Puli, I will come back after Chinese New Year. Ticket prices go way down right after this event so the cost isn't much. Got so darn many bills to pay back here I cannot afford to pay rent in Taiwan and the only place I can live for free is north of Puli.

Puli is a nice place but it was near the epicenter of the big quake. Don't know if it has recovered. BTW: The place is supposedly famous for having beautiful women. Now, I usually do not pay much attention to such claims but, in this case, there may something there. I never saw so many cute women in any other town in Taiwan! Must be the altitude.

Thanks for the info on the hot springs. I plan to visit them.
