Vacations restart in tsunami-hit areas
Tuesday, January 4, 2005 Posted: 10:30 AM EST (1530 GMT)
PARIS, France (AP) -- European tour operators plan to restart offering exotic holidays in countries stricken by the tsunamis that devastated parts of Asia.
"There is no better way to help the people of this region than to go take vacations there," the president of the French Association of Tour Operators, Rene-Marc Chikli, said in a newspaper interview published Tuesday. |
But it's not just the French ...

Italian tour operators also encouraged travelers to return to the region.
"Italian tourists contribute to the income of these zones, so it is important to let them return," said Francesco Granese, director of tour operator group Assotravel. |
And finally ...

Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, said while there were still areas of Asia which remained badly affected, travel agents were encouraging Britons to visit other areas.
"Apart from those areas (the west coast of Thailand, coastal areas of Sri Lanka and some islands of the Maldives) travel is possible and we are telling people to go," Tuke said.
"It's absolutely vitally important that we try to minimize the impact of the tsunami. By staying away we just increase the impact for these people." |
Hmm, I think it's high time we Yanks got to have some fun ripping on you Europeans for a change ...
Oh, you know this is all in good fun. I happen to love Europeans. Really. |

Nottachance!
Tourism = money, and money is part of what's needed in the region right now.
Additionally, people - particularly the suffering - need to know the world still retains some semblance of normality.

These places will need the tourist dollars to help rebuild, we know the countries themselves won't help enough to pay for the rebuilding process. As long as the tourists don't hinder the clean up and better yet if they actually pitch in and help, then they should go back.
I'm sure some will go just to take gruesome pix for their similarly sick friends back home. |

I voted 'NO' but being English I never feel totally European anyway. And I have just allied myself with France, Germany & Spain - OH! The shame of it all.
The EU together is quite a force and is possibly out to combat what it perceives as American aggression. I think our 'old' perspective on the way of things is a useful contrast (sometimes) to the new world order vision of the US. I also think the EU is a bit more aware of the world and maybe even cares for its well-being; witness the Kyoto treaty, Sudan, etc.
But, I do like the way Europe is so compact and yet so varied. When I was in Germany, it was so easy to invade ... err.... I mean travel ... to the surrounding countries.
Lastly - as the old chestnut goes - "Fog in English Channel - continent cut off". |

The fact is that BBC reported this morning that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is asking tourist not to cancel holidays that they have booked already and not to stop coming to Thailand because of this disaster. They have gone so far as to post a list of unaffected hotels in Southern Thailand on their website, http://www.tourismthailand.org/home.php , in order to make the book process easier. They want tourist dollars as tourism is a huge portion of the Thai economy and the loss of revenue would be compounding an already terrible situation. |

When I first heard that tourists were continuing to holiday I was disgusted but looking at the broader picture, I agree with other posters in that it is normality that the people want to get back to and many of the countries hit, as aforementioned, rely so much on tourism. Ofcourse, if we imagine that some people are lying on a beach while down the road there are bodies being found and buried, it is infuriating. I wonder what it is really like there at the moment? I guess you don't know unless you are there. |
