Thoughts turn to the summer and release from the drudgery of forcing English into students' brains or onto their reluctant lips.

What are we doing in the summer? I intend passing my summer in thegrounds of my Balkan dacha, far from students and colleagues.

Poverty will prevent any extensive travels but I may catch a glimpse of the Danube and of the Black Sea.

And it is a looooooong holiday - one of the good things about my current job.

My alter ego, johnslat, is off to the "Homeland".

What of the rest ?

Dear scot47,
" My alter ego, johnslat, is off to the 'Homeland' ".
And not JUST for the summer, either. This expat is becoming a repat. On July 7th - inshallah - I'll leave this land, which is no place like home, for home, which, as Dorothy put it, there is no place like.
Regards,
John

Hi scot47:

Like the great warrior Shonai Ben, I too will be working through the summer months, although I do get 2 weeks of paid holiday in August.

For those 2 weeks, I was thinking of either taking the train to St. Pete in honour of their 300 year anniversary celebration, or maybe spending a week in Sochi (on Russia's Black Sea coast)?

Hey! If I do go to Sochi, and you're in Bulgaria on the Black Sea, we could send each other messages in a bottle? Cool!

In the meantime, I will be down on the banks and beaches of the Volga River at the weekends ... trying to find a clean chair and a chilled beer that doesn't contain preservatives.

What an exciting life I lead, eh? Twisted Evil

Regards,
keNt

I'll finally be going home for the first time in 2 1/2 years, and I'll be bringing the girlfriend with me to meet the family. I'm sure I'll need a vacation from my vacation.

No plans as yet. I'll carry on working during the break but with students disappearing on their own hols here and there my schedule will be a bit easier and most likely with a few gaps. I'll probably spend those days down by the Bosphorus or perhaps spend a night on the Princes' Island if I can reschedule a few lessons to give myself a few clear days.

The wife might be off for a week in August so I've have a peaceful week on my own in the house. Wink

I will be starting my new position in early June... No summer holiday for me, unless you count these past few days that I've spent in the fog in San Francisco. Enjoy your travels, everyone!

Bnix,
Apparently, you'll find him passed out on the floor of the Bigshot's Bar and Diner. It now becomes clear why he turned up for work in the same alcohol-stained shirt every day of the week!

Scot47 - you could always come over here and babysit your "god-child" ManFred while I go off to the Victoria Falls for my holidays. There's plenty of "tea" for your evening libations and heaps of classical novels for you to read while you relax outside and sunbake in the 50 degrees C desert heat. Just make sure that ManFred doesn't eat half of my library.
