Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum but lived in Japan from 1996 to 2000. My wife Megumi and I are moving back to Japan, February 7th, and I need to know where to look for a good used car. I'll be teaching in Yamaguchi Ken need to travel back and forth from Kudamatsu and Tokuyama everyday. Are there any reputable "Autotrader like" websites anyone can suggest?

I don't remember what the term is for it in Japanese, but when they bi-annual inspection comes around people will sell their cars for dirt-cheap. The downside is you will have to pay for all the inspection and maintenance costs this time around. I think it is called shaken, but I don't remember as I've never owned a car in Japan.

Yes, it is shaken. Shaken can be done yearly too if it is old enough. Ofen these cars are free and they are perfectly fine. I picked up my last car (yellow plates) for 65,000 yen and it still had 8 months of shaken left on it.

When you get into town ask around. Someone will put you on to something. Since you will be in Yamaguchi and I'm only across the water in Ehime I can put you in touch with a guy I know. I can vouch for him.
