Just a random question...are there any places a person MUST go to while or before they leave Japan. I am looking for some ideas for an upcoming break. Thanks!
Ps-I'm not particularly interested in any specific type of place... |

If you're not looking for a specific place, what are you looking for? Onsens, polluted beaches, tanbos, pachinkos? I am perplexed. |

A wise man climbs Mt. Fuji once in his lifetime. An unwise man climbs it twice.
Besides Fuji, I'd say - Okinawa, Sapporo, an onsen in the mountains, a shrine outside of a city (a hike away), region specific festivals, an inaka (a REAL inaka), if you are from Tokyo go to Osaka, if you are from Osaka go to Tokyo, if you are from neither go to both. |

I personally must go to Kyoto. I am now entering the last 6 months of my stay in Japan, and one thing I feel I would regret is if I didn't go and see that city. I would sort of like to see the snow festival up in Hokkaido, but as someone who grew up in Northern climes, it is not as big a deal. I have already been to Tokyo, Okinawa, and Kobe. The small islands of Okinawa were special, but Naha city itself was just another Japanese city. Ditto for Kobe and Tokyo. I have gone to some really nice little areas around Fukuoka city, but I think that every prefecture has these little quaint towns and temples in the country side just waiting to be explored. |

I'd wander over Mt Aso in Kyushu. Eerily beautiful place. If it is this time of year you are considering it and you have the cash, take a skiing tour to Niseko in Hokkaido. Out of this world skiing. |

I think these are some places you SHOULD visit while or before you leave Japan: Todaji Temple in Nara, Roanji Temple in Kyoto, the bamboo forest in Arashiyama, Kyomizu Temple in Kyoto, Shikoku Island & Kobe's Chinatown..to name but a few..

Hmmm shows how subjective asking this kind of open question is really. I've been to all of those places but Kobe and wouldn't recommend them... different stokes I guess. But worth bearing in mind when the OP considers the suggestions here. |
