Hey there,
I don't mean to be nasty, but its kinda ironic that you're looking for film school in Taiwan when you live in Los Angeles. Yes, you can study film, art or design, but you'd need to be completely proficient in Mandarin Chinese. If you are, then I might help you look into it. Otherwise, there's no use in even asking. Try AFI (the American Film Institute) in LA as USC and other presigious programs are pretty hard to get into. Also, the Pacadena School of Art and Design is quite reputable.
People come to Taiwan for many reasons, but film school I've never heard.
peace,
mr. X |

Dude,
Youre assuming too much. You know what they say about people who assume too much. Anyway, Ive been in Taiwan for a couple of years and I really like it there. I am hoping to return with my family. Ive been at AFI and graduated there with a MFA, and finally Ive originally from PASADENA so Ive been there also. Actually I really enjoy traveling and before the Mrs came long Ive been to over 12 countries. So Mr. X, you could say Ive been there done that. So are you going to help? Peace, Im out!

You might want to ask this question over on Forumosa if you haven't already done so.
Not that it is any of my business, but why are you asking this question? Are you interested in teaching film in Taiwan? Definitely a unique question for Dave's ESL Cafe (and appreciated, since often the board in general sees the same type of questions over and over).
Just curious,
Kirk |

Thanks for the info Kirk. Yes I am interested in teaching Film or Digital Video which I presently teach here in LA. So here it is for everyone who was WONDERING why I asked such a question. I would love to teach at a university in Taiwan but not English. No offense to all you out there who teach English. Personally I just cant see myself teaching English when sometimes I speak double negatives. A bad habit one gets from being from LA the real LA. I think triple negatives are applauded. |

Ok Moe,
Sorry if I hit a nerve. You're right - I did assume you were looking to study film and not teach it. With an MFA from AFI, I'm a bit surprised with your writing ability. If you're first language is not English, than forgive me again for assuming too much. If you're proficient in Mandarin, and have, indeed, graduated with an MFA from the extremely competitive American Film Institute - than you should be able to find a teaching job no problem.
If you don't read and write Mandarin fluently, than how do you suppose you could teach film? It is not a requirement for a film student to have a high level of English to study the subject. Film is loaded with technical and content-specific vocabulary that most native speakers wouldn't even understand.
I say: Bring your camera and editing software and make your own movie in Taiwan. Lots of documentary possibilities in a land that is so myserious and unkown to most Westerners.
Words from a fellow film school grad.
peace,

Hey Moe,
I think Kirk's suggestion to going to formosa.com or tealit is a good one.
I also found a couple of links that might help
...http://search.asiaco.com/Taiwan/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/
http://www.worldwide.edu/ci/taiwan/index.html
At least these links might take you to various university/college sites that can tell you what programs are offered.
I could find out more specifics if those to links aren't helpful.

Yo X,
I dont know if I should backhand you for commenting on my writing or not. Anyway, A couple of years ago through some contacts several Taiwan Universities were interested in me and were in the preliminary stages of submitting the paper work to MOE. (Ministry of Education) At that time Saris virus was strong in Taiwan and I kind of back off from this venture and continued teaching here in LA. I am still interested in going back, why you may ask. I really dont know, its a mystery that may be revealed to me when I get there. I lived in Taipei for several years and went to a university to learn Chinese. Presently I am not proficient in Chinese. I feel with a little effort I could be semi-fluent again. Besides, my wife could help me in that area and she likes the idea because she wants our kids to learn Chinese. My basic strategy is to send out my resume to all the university with a film department and the first one who bites gets me.
Hey X, I tried your link, thanks anyways but not too helpful. I would appreciate if someone could just rattle off all the film schools in Taiwan with their websites. Are there that many? As an incentive if I get the gig I will honor anyone with a 9 course meal at their favorite restaurant. OK? |

The help you can get here may be somewhat limited. This is an English teaching board. Most people here are teachers. You may get more bites at www.forumosa.com It's the largest expat site serving Taiwan's international community. People from all walks of life post there. You'll get a bit more info there, I'm sure. |
