Has anyone heard of ULI (Universal Language Institute), a recruiting firm for high schools and such in the Kanto area? They are advertising a position that sounds fairly attractive, but I am leery of dealing with them for various reasons.

I worked for ULI a few years ago at a high school in Tokyo. The school was OK. The pay was good and they always paid on time. The materials were awful. The boss was temperamental but I didn't have much contact with him. Still, not a bad job.

Glenski,

I applied to a similarly attractive position from ULI back in February '04. Everything sounded great initially and I started corresponding with a Mr. Vandermeer I believe. I am very careful with such outfits and at the first sign of anything dodgy, I end it immediately. This gent seemed nice enough and pretty up front, but as we talked further and got into more detail about the position, a few things changed. Nothing massive, just little things that weren't mentioned up front. It's been a while but I remember one thing was the location of the job. I was originally told it was at a certain station, then was told it was one subway stop away from said station, and then finally that it was a bus ride from the subway station. Such matters may not concern others and other than the little things it seemed like a pretty good deal. Perhaps if I didn't already have a great job(and was still at an Eikaiwa), I would have jumped at it. Relative to other dispatch outfits like Interac, ULI and Sagan are a notch above. However, they're the same type of company so tread carefully. the only advice I can give is to get ALL the details of the position first thing. Good luck.

Cheers,
Chix
