Looks like we'll be back in Taiwan next month. Got a job with with the MOE as a teacher on Kinmen. Has anyone else worked for the private and then the public school system and what would you say are the benefits and drawbacks? The last time we were in Taiwan, we had buxiban sponsorship and i worked occasionally in an elementary and junior high school. Now our visas and ARC will be directly sponsored by the MOE. Any comments or observations, from those who have or are going through this, would be greatly appreciated. |

Sorry I can't help with your question about the benefits and drawbacks about the public school system. Hopefully someone with experience in this area will reply soon, so we can both learn more about the public school situation.
I do have a question and request. I am currently trying to find a list or names of public/private elementary and junior high schools in Taiwan to contact for future employment. I have not had much success. If your willing, could you tell me where and how you found a public school position, so that I might follow your lead? I noticed that you said your visas and ARC are directly sponsered through the MOE. Did you contact the MOE site with inquiries, or did you find a public school position on an ESL website? Thus far, I have only found Kueishan (Private) School via Scott Sommers website. I appreciate any help you could offer about locating public school positions on the internet or how to go about finding them once in Taiwan. Thanks. |

It was advertised through the Canada Education Network here on Dave's. Their requirements are that you have a B. Ed with experience in TESL. Also, they only seem to be hiring British and Canadian treachers and the positions are for publicnschools in more rural areas rather than the larger cities. |

The MOE began a program to bring ESL to some of the aboriginal communities on the outlying island more than two years ago with a significant budget allocation. Unfortunately very little of that money is making it to the aboriginal communities on the outlying islands. Because of the MOE policy of contracting out these services to third parties much of this program and it's funding never made it to the communities it was intended for.
I am happy to hear that the MOE has begun hiring teachers directly but be forewarned the Ministry of Education is also known locally as the Ministry of Racial Purity. They are by far one of the most corrupt and racist institutions on Taiwan.
Good luck and let us know how it turn out. I you get into a tough spot drop us a line.

Good luck,
A. |
