I have OCN/NTT. I pay 2,988 yen for ADSL (the modem was shipped to me for free) and 2,596 yen for phone line rental plus any calls that I make. This is a great deal for me because I have 2 other roommates who I split the cost with.
Through OCN I have DotPhone which means I can make international calls pretty cheap - 9 yen per minute to USA and 10 yen per minute to Canada. Local calls (which are not free just because you have a phone line) are 8 yen per 3 minutes unless the person I am calling also has DotPhone and then it is free.
I have a wireless card, but not a router (which emits the radio signal that the card needs to pick up for you to surf the web wirelessly). I just have a LAN cable hooked into my coputer from the modem (as opposed to a regular phone line. You need a LAN port on your computer if you have any other type of service besides dial up or wireless). Most new computers will come with a LAN port or you can buy and adapter for about 3,000 yen that you plug into another port (USB, Serial, Parallel, etc.) that will convert that port into a LAN port.
I signed up through Assist Solutions- it's a company that NOVA gave me info about at orientation. They speak English, so that was the main reason I chose to go through them. They also offer to help get you hooked up with other companies- they're sort of a middleman. I can verify that NTT offers English support via telephone because I have had to use it a couple of times. It's a good option if you can't get Yahoo in your area. |
