Being gay in any country is a shame. I'm not intetrested in debating the merits of sodomy, but I refer you to the NARTH (National Association for the Research and Therapy of Homosexuality) or amazinginfo websites for further information.

I don't think being gay is a shame. Gay is the same as others, except their sexual orientation. I am a gay, but I devote myself to develop China's export and credit insurance industry, help chinese export companies promote their market share in the world, help them control export risk, just like experts in EDCExport Development Canada

Being gay is not a shame. Pretending to be God and judging others is a shame. I refer you to: http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/facts_changing.html
and many other websites.

Mao Tse Tung was an atheist and not particularly fond of sodomy, to my knowledge. Why bring God into it? He doesn't approve of it either.

Ok, I understand now. You are one of those "special" people who knows what God likes and doesn't like. There is no reasoning or logic in your beliefs. No use to try. Spread your hate like a good Christian. Happy New Year.......

Since I was vaguely aware of the Chinese term mou dou fu (grinding bean-curd), I had assumed that the psdeudonym, tofuman, was code for those in the know. I thought, "Well, there's no subtlety here."

Silly me!

(Edited for subtlety.)

Gosh there are plenty of posts here - not many from women though I notice... It is hard to be gay in China, I've been doing it for many years. I'd be happy to talk to anyone who also has a Chinese partner or who would like any advice.

You seem to be missing the point a little. Actually there really aren't many gay bars in China and hardly any for women... I'm not really interested in gay men!

I wasn't really talking about how hard it is pick up men or women. Having sex isn't really the same as trying to sustain a relationship. This I have done for many years and this is what I was talking about in my post.

The hard part about being gay in China with a Chinese partner is having to watch them go through so much family pressure and struggle to make difficult decisions.

I agree with you! We feel much family pressure and in china a man who doesn't marry seems to be unfilial.

yes true
but isnt this fairly typical for gay people everywhere
in america with bush and the religious right, what will the future hold their for gay rights
unless you are from a big city like london or new york or where ever, i think it must be hard to come out anywhere else

i think you would be surprised to see how many underground gay bars/clubs there are in china, like everything else in this country , you just have to look hard for it but its there Very Happy

I've been in China now for about six months and am now certain that I, unfortunately, am a guy who sees the glass half empty. This country has in many ways kicked my a--. But I want to leave the negativity with the Chinese people and their incessantly irritating and irrational ways -- not with the sanctity of foreigners and their "sane" lands.

Therefore, PLEASE DON'T BE GAY IN CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!

For godssakes man, please, just not here.

Oh please, give it a rest. When I go to China to teach, there will be one more gay teacher in China. End of story. My experiences will not depend on people who say "I'm not gay, but...." or those Westerners who come to China with all of their prejudice and hatred intact. Who knows, I may end up being a role model for someone. After all, isn't this a teachers' forum?

My best friends are gay. They live the high life in Beijing. Homosexuality is often seen in the West as urbane and chic, of course rural simpletons will contradict me on this, but they will also contradict me when I say "evolution". China at present is in the throes of lusting after the West so homosexuality amongst young people is a new and fascinating thing, just one more facet of the Western mystique. Yes young macho Chinese men, as well as insecure latently gay ones will profess their aversion at the first chance. Beijing has a semi-cool club in the Sanlitun district, aside from the creepy old Aussie bears, the atmosphere is perfectly cordial. Tianjin has a magnificent gay club, the name escapes me but it is reminiscent of the thunderdome of Mad Max fame only larger. One suggestion though, keep your sexual orientation away from the workplace, it is extremely bad form to act flaming whilst relating to co-workers. Honestly, isnt it just aweful to listen to some bull-headed jock go on and on about some coed he nailed that weekend. Who or what you f u c k isnt applicable in a professional environment, save it for your friends. My friend told me that young Chinese men make the best twinks, so enjoy.
