I'm moving to Xalapa this summer indefinitely. I'm looking for a teaching position (aren't we all), while my fiancee attends The University of Veracruz. I hold a Masters degree in Secondary Education (English) and am currently working toward my PhD. in TESOL, but have just started. Is anyone out there, in Xalapa, or familiar with the area?

Depends on what kind of job you want. I'd check with the university first.

There are also language schools. Harmon Hall, for example.

You have better credentials than most. Check out ITESM, too. www.itesm.mx

They don't. There are some other schools though, as you suggested (Harmon Hall, etc).

No they dont have a branch in Xalapa. U of Veracruz was mentioned and I thought there was one in Veracruz. There is a branch in Puebla (seems to be the closest), but I dont know if that is commutable.

Just seems a waste with sanders educational background to teach at Harmon Hall. Not to rag on HH but he could have better opportunities.

Hey, HH was good enough for me for 4 years (3 as director), and I already HAD my PhD.

I appreciate the replies. I've looked into HH, but consistently found negative reviews. Some are positive, but most suggest other means of income. Better income, anyway. I wonder about university positions.

Sometimes salaries are unpredictable here. One of the reasons I spent 4 years with HH is because as a director I received a percentage of the gross income of the school. I made about twice what I would have made at the state university (not Veracruz state--I don't know what the salaries are like there.)

I like the idea, moonraven, of a well established school, and I'm sure the pay was pretty good, but as a teacher I won't be receiving that extra percentage. From what I've read and heard, it's much easier to find higher paying gigs without the hours (45 and weekends). Not that I'm afraid of work. I'm not going to Mexico just to play. But I would like to have some time to experience the culture outside of work. What is HH paying now?

I have no idea what their pay scale is like now. I left HH 6 years ago.

I can tell you that it is a graduated scale. Levels A, B, etc. Or was.

It isn't necessary to work 45 hours. That is full time. For a year I worked around 30, as I was researching a book. Not all that time is in class.

Was that enough to get by on in Xalapa? Just 30 hours, or did you have other ways to finance your stay?

I have always "gotten by"--even when only working 18 hours a week.

Harmon Halls vary across the country. If you like the system, contact the school directly.
