I'm graduating in April with a BA-hon Archaeology and have limited teaching experience. I'd like to begin work in early May, but I could wait until September if I need to. I realize that I've missed the JET deadline (at least for Canada) and am not really sure if I should begin contacting potential employers this early on. I'd like to find a job from Canada and am willing to travel just about any where. Obviously, I'd like the best working conditions possible (nice atmosphere, decent wages etc.). Any advice would be appreciated!

If you want a nice atmosphere, you'll be hard-pressed to find things here in China where the entire town/city will be visually appealing.

As for times in general, the summer season is a high time, so once you have your BA , take a month to sort out everything and sift through offers. You shouldn't have to wait `til September, but who knows.

I just wanted to make sure this wasn't the type of situation where I should be applying months and months in advance. I'm more concerned about the atmosphere at work than finding the perfect city to live in, but it is a good point to remember that all cities have their more and less desirable areas.

Anyway, thanks for your help!

Where do you want to work?

Most countries out here have different school term times ( and even in a country there can be different term times) so what you might think is well in advance may be last minute. Add in the language schools who work all year round and ....

In Thailand for example most schools start in May and some are already advertising for these jobs. So if you wanted to come here, you wouldnt be too early in applying.

First question:

Do you have student loans you need to repay? That changes the whole situation.

I teach in China. I love it there. I put a large amount (to me) of money into my bank acount each month I'm there. That's because I have a pension and live on my Chinese earnings.

Put your resume on Dave's and see what comes up. That's how I got my job. Also explore other avenues.

GOOD LUCK and enjoy the world!
