Hi

I know that Thailand uses PAL and here in North America DVD, Video Games and TV's use NTSC. This may be a dumb question, which I think I already know the answer but just wanted to double check.

If i take my dvd , playstation and video games to Thailand will they work? Im not too worried about the Playstation as I can get it converted at MBK but I am more concerned about the games and DVD's.

Thanks

Hi there:

I'm not really 100% sure - but you might find the answer by searching these 2 links:

Yes, they will work. Most DVD players and TVs use PAL and NTSC (i.e. you can switch between them!). I brought my American N64 when I came here years ago and no problemo! I've also played US DVD's on my DVD player no problemo!

And certainly your PS2 will be okay. Are you going to get it chipped so you can play 100 Baht games? I love PS2 and must have over 600-700 games now!

I'll happily kick your arse at Pro Evo 4 (soccer game!). Wink

Playstation games will work. Buy a multi-region DVD player when you get here (and when you return home).

Thailand is technically Region 3 when it comes to DVDs, but all the copies in Pantip (and elsewhere) are Region 1 (Japan/USA) DVDs anyway, and you'll certainly be buying more of those than you will be buying originals. It's actually nice to have the multi-region player anyway, as you'll likely want some Thai DVDs as a sovenier and as these are usually minted in a region 3 format...

You'll need a power converter for your Playstation, which can be bought here fairly cheaply. But get a good one. As far as I know, the "conversion" they do at MBK for a PS is usually to allow it to play copied games, not to change any regional settings. I may be wrong on this point.

A chipped PS2 will play the Phantip DVDs BUT NOT 'proper' DVDs that you rent from the video shops. So I'm guessing (thanks to SG!) that they're region 1 compatible, rather than region 3?

Thanks for the information guys.

I knew that DVD's bought in Thailand worked when I got back to North America so I wasnt too worried there. I just wanted to bring along some of my favourite DVD's like the Sopranos, and Simpsons because those were hard to track down last time I was there and I was there for 6 months. Eventually I did find the Sopranos.

I will just get a Multi-regioni DVD player as Sheep-Goats suggested. Any suggestions on where to pick one up? Emporium, Central, MBK? Same for the converter?

I cant wait to get the chipped PS2 to play all those cheap 100 baht games. Ken I may not be able to kick your ass at Pro Evolution as I am just getting used to it now they have released it as Winning Eleven.

Simpsons and Sopranos are prolific here, now.

Any department store will carry a variety of DVD players. Ask the staff for a multi-region one, then check the box to be sure. Thais will sometimes just give you anything and hope it's the right thing rather than make sure they get it right the first time.

Sounds good. Drop me a PM when you're here and we'll hook up for a few beers and a gaming session! Keep practicing though (I'm not even that good myself really!)

Mercenaries I just played yesterday and it's wicked!
