Hey Rachael,

if you ever end up in Buenos Aires there's a long-standing English language 'paper called 'The Buenos Aires Herald'. It used to have a massive circulation in the city (we're talking 40-50 years ago here) but now sells something like 10000 copies a day.

It's basically written by interns and volunteers these days, an English friend did a bit for them whilst on his year abroad when at uni studying Spanish. It would certainly be good experience for someone starting out in the business. They have a website-google it and it'll come up.

Matt

OH, I see--you are looking for interesting "artensanio" stories -- offbeat cultural stuff etc that might be of interest to readers in the Southwest US or Florida.

May I suggest you take a bus to Ilobasco, El Salvador? They make munecos de barro there (little statuettes of baked kiln-fired clay.)

When I was there in the '80's there was civil war and the family I was staying with was petrified I had left the capital and gone off into the countryside to visit this little hamlet. It's very well-known in El Salvador and among artsy-crafty types. But now it's easier to get there from San Salvador, I'm sure. It's maybe a 2 hr busride from there or less.

You will see all these little figurines in display cases. Explain you're a periodista or escritora and that you're working on an article on the munecos de barro. (You can speak Spanish, right?) I'm sure someone will take you through the process from beginning to end. It would be an interesting little article and I'm sure some mag somewhere would be interested in it!

Good luck!
