Hello,
If I go to Japan with Interac, I will be earning 250,000 yen per month before tax.
I know this is not a lot but, is this enough to have some social life?
I don't really drink much and don't smoke.
I like going out but wouldn't go out every day of the week, maybe a couple of times a week.
Will I be able to save up?
Are clothes very expensive in Japan?
Can you make cheap phone calls to Europe? |

Yeah. I've never really had anything that I could label "baller status", until I purchased $30 movie tickets. After that I was living "poor status", though. It was my single moment of glory. |

Hi there, this is my first post on this forum.
In April, my girlfriend her friend and me are heading over to Japan through Nova to teach. We are very excited as you can all imagine.
I am going on a working holiday visa and my girlfriend and her friend are going on working visas as they both have degrees.
I have been browsing through the forums for a few months now and find it very useful. What i want to ask is though and i have done many searches but havent found the right information or enough was we want to all live in the one place. Just wandering what would be the average price on a 2 bedroom place in either Tokyo or Osaka, we dont need a full on posh apartment but something comfortable would be nice. Is there any chance of getting something decent for around 150,000 yen a month?
Thanks guys and i look forward to hearing from you all.... |

Thats a bit like asking whether you can find a place in New York or Los Angeles. Osaka has 6 million people in it. Rents willl depend on area, where you want to live. I have rented one room mansions in Osaka for 70,000 as well as houses for 100,000 yen a month. How close to a train station do you want to be as often prices are governed by how convenient they are to public transport such as trains. if you are willing to put up with a 10 minute bike ride and live a little further out than central Osaka (defined by the loop line that runs around central Osaka, or within Osaka-city precincts) you can usually find something reasonable and close to train lines. Osaka prefecture (which includes several cities) meanwhile is huge and runs from near Kobe south to the new international airport. Tokyo housing in general is the most expensive and runs the gamut from total dives I wouldnt keep a dog in, to $20,000 a month. 150,000 yen a month should buy you plenty in Osaka anyway.
Try having a look in the classifieds at Kansai Flea Market
http://www.kfm.to for an idea for apartment prices
Where will you be working?
PS If both of you are with NOVA you can rent one of their apartments but they will charge you 70,000 yen each for rent, for an apartment that may rent to your neighbor for 90,000 yen. be aware NOVA makes money on the deal but you dont have to pay key money or furnishings. Find your own place and expect to pay key money as well of several months rent. |

You will be fine. Just be open to how small your living quarters can be. You can have a social life fine. You can go out and have a blast, but be reasonable. Yes, you can save a little. Clothes are often cheaper in Japan, depending on where you want to go (Uniqlo etc). There are also very expensive places to shop. Yes, you can make phone calls.
If you go to a movie that's the "late show" meaning around an 8:30pm to 9:00pm start that usually ends close to last train time (subway) or before midnight, you can pay 1200 yen. The first of the month is 1000 yen and Wednesday ladies get in for 1000 yen. Those prices are cheaper than Canada now. |

PAULH, thanks for your reply. There will be three of us living in one place, my girlfriend and i will be sharing a room and her friend will be in her own room.
I hear NOVA is very expensive, but we will use them to start off with so it is less hassles for us, but we will be definitely moving out as soon as possible.
we are hopefully looking for something that is furnished too, a lot of websites that advertise fully furnished and the like are all based in Tokyo. not much information about Osaka, or am i not looking in the right places? |

replying to Sabine's msg.
Yes you'll have enough to save and have fun. As Canuck said.
I usually spend this in a month
50,000 rent & utils
40,000 in food
5,000 internet
6,000 cellphone
40,000+ going out(movies, etc, shopping etc)
I'm usually left with 100,000 in the bank, that I rarely touch. Some months I can save 150,000, but then that money goes to paying of student loans etc.
Beware though, your first pay comes after 8 weeks. So ensure you have enough money to last you for the long haul. After that's said and done, you get plenty of holidays. I know someone working at Interac, and they're having the best time ever. |
