Hello to everyone on the Taiwan forum,
I'm an ESL teacher currently in Beijing. I've been teaching in China for the last three years, and am now planning a move to Taiwan at the end of January. I've spent the last few days reading the various posts on this site, lots of great information, thank you, but there are still a few questions which I have not been able to answer. Can you folks help me out?
I'm planning on picking up a two month visitor's visa in Hong Kong so I can come and check out the scene, check out the different schools and get a feel for what's going on.
Hong Kong Visa:
-do I need to show a bank account with lots of money before I'll be issued a Visa?
-If yes how much money?
-What kind of paperwork is required?
-Is a simple ATM bank slip adequate?
-How much time is required for the visa process?
-Anything else I should know about getting a visa in Hong Kong?
I'll also need to get to Taipei from Hong Kong.
-What's the cheapest way?
-How much does a plane ticket cost at this time of year?
-Anyone know a good travel agent in Hong Kong?
I hear there are companies who have set up "Chinese classes" for issuing student visas. Does anybody have more information on these "schools". I don't plan to work more than 20 hours a week as I need the extra time to study Chinese. Enrolling in one of these "schools" and getting work as a private tutor etc. (I'm aware of the legalities) might be the best way to go, what do you think?
Thanks for your time and if anyone has any questions about the ESL scene here in Beijing just ask,

Yes.

I forget how much exactly. However, in order to get a 60 day visa, you'll need to be able to demonstrate sufficient funds to support you for the entire "visit."

You'll have to fill out an application, have an itinerary from your travel agent showing enter and exit dates for Taiwan, photos and a bank statement

You'll have to check with TECO for that

It was 24 hours from time of application submission for me

Probably China Airlines

Prices vary drastically. Depends on when you want to come and how open you are to flying at any time. For example, my girlfriend and I went to Hong Kong a while back. I was able to fly out on a particular evening, but my gf had to wait until the next morning before she was available. The price for her was nearly double. Chinese new year may see a price hike as well as diminished seat availability

Yes, there absolutely are these kinds of schools available. Just look in the Classified section of the English papers when you get here for locations.

$100,000 NT is usually required. Many people put this into their bank account for a day or two, long enough to get a statement from the bank 'proving' that they have these funds. I have heard of the visa office (or whatever they call themselves) calling the bank to ask if this was actually true. If this is what you are planning to do then it might be better to leave the money in your account until after the visa trip. |

I show them a bankbook that was updated just after a paycheck went in. I have shown savings of 80K and 45K. I have also (my first time) shown travellers cheques, 1500 CDN I think.

People find that it is less offensive to contradict a quote when the name is not attached. I realize that this is the Internet and common courtesy tends to fall by the way side. Call me old fashioned but everyone posting here is a real person and deserves respect as such.
Good luck,

I presume from your name that you are a Canadian citizen. If you search the Visa Connections database at www.visaconnection.com you should be able to find most of the info you're looking for. The government of Taiwan also has a site for visa info but I find that it leaves things a little unclear. |
