Thinking: Surabaya, Semarang, Jakrata -maybe Medan w/ liberal contract for hopping to Malaysia. Def not Sulewesi - sick of that place!


Weighing it against China so if you've taught/lived in both??? I've never been to China outside HKG/MAC.

Really there is NO Standard Package for teaching, just read Dave's,then apply your powers of persuasion along with a resume.Does your B.a say "distinguished" in it? Employers do not have a collegial Reference source." Minnie Pearl's Univ. of Finite Wisdom" might work,if carefully crafted in Thailand. However, you have a solid base already, and complete your TESL (120 hrs.) if you want better access to jobs in Korea,Japan,Taiwan and Malaysia. BTW, see Dave's ESLCafe, Job Info.-Asia-Malaysia. It's a good market---per the postings. Avoid Sumatra now-few school structures left-so don't get in the way yet. Medan might be O.K. Also, be sure to note that you speak bahasa Malaysia ! CAN you get hold of your State/Calif. Cert? I think it is conducive and very useful in Korea and Taiwan.Public schools in those venues starting to "prefer" or even require State Certs. Don't know if the "Substitue" is O.K. In summary, No Rules-Read beyond the employers' need-anything can be negotiated. Best of luck!

What the h.ell are you talking about 'avoid Sumatra now'. Another MORON who has no idea of the reality here! Two thirds of the island of Sumatera was 'unaffected' by the earthquake and subsequent tidal waves!! 'Unaffected', in that we did not suffer the physical destruction, although we have had to suffer the emotional results of what has happened here, many of us with the loss of people we held dear.

The best thing that can happen to Sumatera and Indonesia as a whole, at the present time, and in the forseeable future, is the restructuring of the island (and Indonesia), and the continuation of education in whatever form.

The western media talks about 'rebuilding Indonesia', as though it were a 'single small entity' where you can implement a 'single small policy' to implement the necessary changes. If you consult a map and do some research, you will soon realise that this is not true.

If you want to help - Come here and help educate people for the future! If you don't want to do that - don't waste people's time by posting spurious posts, where you know nothing about this wonderful country, and where you haven't done sufficient research to have an opinion on any subject pertaining to it.

It never ceases to amaze me how just how many people there are in the world with more limbs than brain cells. Sumatra is a very, very large island and as such even something as unimaginably massive as the recent tsunami left almost 3/4 of the coastline unscathed. Maybe the author of the 'avoid Sumatra' quip might consider some remedial geography tuition.

Well Parvati, glad you got people riled up, and glad you could get rid of the current problems in Indonesia with an 'emoticon'.

By the way, where does your comment about Korea come in? Do you know that Korea and Indonesia are not the same country?

Sorry if I lampasted other people on this thread. I just get really mad at people who don't know the reality here.

Teachers are needed here, and will continue to be need in the future. PLEASE COME!!

I thought that Korea & Indonesia were both cities in Thailand!

I guess I should have spent more time listening to my geography teacher rather than trying to look up her skirt

Anyway, I would strongly encourage anyone interested in a wild adventure to give Indonesia a go. It's not all volcanoes, terraced rice paddies, beaches, girls (or boys - whatever takes your fancy), motorbikes and fun...well not all of the time anyway. If you have patience (lots of it) and you're up for an adventure you could do worse than Indonesia for a year.

If you worked for Kelt in Surabaya you would be on at least Rp9,000,000 plus Rp1,500,000 for housing allowance.
I wouldn't work for anything less.

As far as standard package goes, there's no such thing. If KELT pays that vast amount, try for it, but it must be the best-paying school in the country, apart from International schools.

EF will pay 99% of new teachers a beginner's wage. Fresh out of High school in the USA/OZ/UK? Same wage as a Degree with bits added on. I've said it before, but EF will give you a salary increase only if you stay at the one group of schools, owned by the same person. Move to another city or group and it's like snakes and ladders, and you slide straight back to square 1.

Lowest paying of EF schools is Yogya at Rp3.5 million, no allowances whatsoever. Most other schools make some sort of arrangements about accommodation, or help with housing or rental and even supply a maid to wash and iron.

The quote for KELT is misleading. Yes they do pay a higher than average salary but there is no end of year bonus. Of course they are simply paying the correct salary as opposed to keeping a little back each month.
