I'm not a computer expert, but I believe your computer's DVD player will automatically adjust to the region you want to play. However, be advised that you can only switch regions 3x or so, then the player "locks" onto the region and stays there. I've heard there are ways to set it back.
Another option might be to purchase a Japanese "region 2" DVD player over here, and use it to play Japanese DVDs and your computer to play North American DVDs, if you plan on bringing any.
There shouldn't be any problems in adapting it to use Japanese current.
Like I initially wrote, I'm not an expert at these things, so if anybody out there thinks I'm giving bogus info, please correct me!!!! |

Japan has the two flat pin plug system. If your laptop has the same, you'll be able to plug it in as soon as you step off the plane. Any voltage difference is irrelevant: laptops are meant to be used anywhere in the world and come with a transformer as part of the power lead. In fact, if you look at the label on that it will say something like 110~230V. |

Are there many problems bringing DVD's through customs? I want to bring one of those carrying packs so that I can bring about 50 of them.
Should I get an external floppy disk drive for Japan or will my North American laptop be able to use Japanese Cds? |

No problem bringing in DVDs for personal use. Porn will land you in the can though...
Floppy? CD? Not sure what you mean here as you are mixing two different media. Basically, floppies, CDs and DVD blank media are universal meaning that what you buy in a shop in Japan will work as well as what you buy elsewhere. |

Thanks guys,
Good news on the dvds, I don't have any porn to worry about.
I wasn't sure if cds had the region 2 problem like dvd movies and thought disketts might be the way around it. I'm happy to hear that blank cds and dvds are universal as well.
Thanks again |
