I've decided to come to Spain in September and take a TEFL course from either EBC or canterbury, but I can't decide which one. I've researched them all online to compare but would really love some comments from people already in Spain who know about them. I've heard a lot of good things about EBC and would really like to know more about Canterbury (especially since it's a little bit cheaper).

Thanks so much!

Liz

You know what, I also went thru what youre doing, research, looking for the best options, weighing the pros and cons, etc. As a former student EBC student I will back my old school and Id say I was happy with them.

As someone who went thru the hard work of choosing the best TEFL school for my needs, all I can say is if you have any doubts, contact the schools you have chosen, email them, ask for answers. Ask them a lot of questions. They should be available for this as they should understand your anxiety, it is a big move after all.

I will not say anything against Canterbury because I didnt go thru them and it wouldnt be fair to give unfounded observations. Im sure like with EBC there are also happy ex students from Canterbury. Ask these 2 schools for references and go with your instincts, after all most reliable TEFL schools in Madrid or anywhere in the world will have a lot of their information already published on the internet. From the way the information is given, you can more or less judge which TEFL program will be best for you. Mucha suerte y hasta pronto!

Hola edawg,

I did the TEFL course with Canterbury back in June 2002 so I guess you could say I know a thing or two about them.

I was happy with the course, the social events/excursions were fun and a great way to meet more seasoned teachers for connections (and interrogations!!! =) and they gave me my hours as promised (well technically back then that wasn't part of the deal, but they would still hire on their graduates).

My only major gripe would be the pay, they aren't the worst but nor are they the best in Madrid. But really, you'll never make "good money" until you get completely away from all academies and find your own private clients. Working for them is not obligatory if you just want to do the TEFL course and head out on your own, but then again you have to start somewhere!!

That aside though, I would have to agree with Mary, seeing as I've only had one friend who has gone through EBC I don't really know much about them and couldn't say that one is better than the other. Ultimately you will need to research them both and pick the one you feel is right for you.

Either way get ready for a treat, I came over for a spanish girl and fell in love with the city!! Very Happy
