TST is one of those places I avoid if possible. But I do like Habrour City and the Ferry, so I do find myself there once in awhile.
I usually have my MP3 with me and the hawkers still annoy me. Coming off the ferry once, a guy stepped in front of me to offer watches or something. I shot him my best FOAD look, complete with snarl and all and he backed off. Horrible, I know...but as someone earlier said, if I want a copy watch or a suit, I will go to a market or Shenzhen! |

Haven't spent to much time in TST, but I did like Kowloon Park when I was there last time. I don't really mind the Indian hawkers, as I'm pretty used to people trying to sell me shit wherever I go, living in China and all. If you want a real annoying shopping experience head to Louhu Commercial City in Shenzhen, right outside of the HK border. All you hear is: "you buy watch? DVD? DVD, sir? foot massage, buy foot massage." Oi...Someone even asked me if I wanted to buy "golf" why yes...yes I do...TST is nothing compared to that. |

I am surprised at the comments about TST.
I work with a group of 75 Foreign Teachers in Guangzhou who look forward to visiting HK.
The saying at our school is
' Visiting HK is re-entering civlisation ' . |

When I was living in Taiwan, my wife and I used to try and hit Hong Kong three times a year. TST was usually the best part of outr trip, with the shops and restaurants. The first time I was there was in 1986, when I was in the navy, and it took me awhile to figure out what the hell "copy watch"was and that Lolex wasn't the Chinese problem of r-l l-r. |

I love TST, but I don't have to see it very often so maybe it's a novelty. When I first went to HK I stayed in the Garden Hostel (long since gone) in TST.
When I lived in HK I would go there about once a week and never had a problem with the place, but the last time I visited HK (in late summer) I had to stay in an overpriced hotel on Nathan Road. Every time I stepped outside people would try to sell me watches, suits, drugs or girls.
The place seems to have lost it's 'charm' and is now just seedy and rotten.
I live in Shanghai now and I still get asked to buy stuff all the time, but the weirdest stuff is in an area called Gubei (all Japanese and Korean expats) where hawkers will try to sell fishing rods. WTF?? |
