Can I ask what the point is of segregating people according to southern states and "outside" of them? Seems weird.

1. Because you Southerners can't pronounce words properly. Just the other day my friend from Texas was trying to tell me that I was saying "deteriorate" wrong... He figured it should be "Duh-TEE-REE-ate" (as opposed to duh-TEE-REE-uh-rate"

2. Because gratuitous usage of "y'all" must be stopped!

3. We can't have y'all going around teaching Japanese people to eat grits now can we?

My parents live about 30 miles from the Arkansas border on the Missouri side. I'm not sure how to respond to the poll. Does it change anything if I say I try to speak with a good NBC voice even though my mother will tell you she went to Wa(r)shington, D.C. last summer?

This isn't a civil war quiz is it? North and South?
How about Eastern and Western Canada? North and South island NZ?

I am lazy so,

"Are you kidding desultude? There are 300 million in the U.S., so partitioning in terms of oldtime traditional American distinctions of North vs. South ain't so bad."

Funny. I was just pondering on this question earlier today, as a matter of fact.
I would consider Southern California Southern. Many wouldn't but I would.
Arkansas? NO

1. I have once again decided to adopt my Southern accent. People seem to be disappointed when Southerners don't use it. I also had a sales job and found that I raised my sales quotas when I used it. So no, not such a bad thing at all.
2. I like ya'll. I also enjoy gratuitessness.
3. They need some grits, somebody needs to bring them some. Then they would have more energy and wouldn't be sleeping on the train so damn much.

Hi Chi-chi,

I agree with you. Geographically So Cal is apart from the traditional Southern States but I am often mistaken for being from the South due to a lazy So Cal accent.

Enjoy yourself,

Hmm... Many confused Americans here... Maybe the OP should have rephrased the poll as:

o NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line
o SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon line

Oh, and a quote for Captain Onigiri:

"It will be a cold day in hell before I recognize Missour-ah!"

How about just two options:

1) California
2) not California

Just kidding, folks! (Although I do feel a certain amount of love for my home state. Despite the Governator. And all the other screwiness that sometimes goes on there.)

While your dividing the Yankees and Dixies I agree that you might as well divide up Canada into, say, GTA (greater Toronto area) and other. Everybody who's anybody is from the GTA. Eat that Quebecors and Vancourites! Laughing

Hey! I resent that! I think the Canada division should be drawn along the East/West lines....

Something like:

o Western Secession provinces (from Saskatchewan to B.C.) -- the ones that want to (and economically COULD) secede from Canada
o Eastern provinces that rely on transfer payments from the West to survive but aside from that, don't give a moose's poop about what goes on there..

No? Yeah, I thought not! Twisted Evil Razz
