I have my first face-to-face interview coming up. It's with Shane. I know a lot of people have concerns about that school but at least they're willing to interview me knowing I'm 55 and others have rejected me for just that reason. My questions would be:

1. Do they pay in full and on time?
2. Do they live up to their contract?
3. Any suggestions for interviewing with this school in particular and for Japan in general? I know the basics: show up, on time, appropriately dressed, bring all the stuff they ask for with you and have some good questions to ask.

Id go in with both eyes open but I wouldnt worry unduly. I heard a million nightmare stoires about NOVA before I started, actually theyre quite legitimate.

I imagine that some of the complaonts are justified but I wouldnt let that put you off. Yuo get a very warped sesne of schools from the internet due to the fact that people generally only bother to write anything if they have a grievance.

For every so and so is a nightmare post you read theres a million "I went to work and had a good day for which I was fairly paid" posts that never get written.

Good luck

Be prepared to answer the question:"Why do you want to teach in Japan?"
They always ask this question.
Otherwise, treat this interview like any other.Be on time,be properly dressed, and most of all,be enthusiastic!Big smile at all times and always be positive.
Good luck dude. Cool

I worked for them for a year. To answer your first two questions, they stick to their obligations in the contract. No more, and no less.

Once or twice I was underpaid, but that had more to do with mistake, than dishonesty. On both occasions it was rectified promptly.

You might want to check out the interview with Shane himself at ELTNews:

Thanks to all for the info so far. I figure that if everyone was as unhappy as the number of negative posts would lead one to believe the schools would have long since gone out of business for lack of staff. Thanks especially for the link to the article on the founder. I'll get great brownie points if I can work it into the interview.

Despite the predictably one-sided interview on eltnews.com, I suggest you read the job information forum here for some postings about Shane.
