More specifically, can anyone recommend a reliable travel agent?

Depends where you want to travel. If it's just locally within Vietnam or over the border to Cambodia/Laos, go to De Tham as there are loads of agencies there (I use Kim Cafe, mainly out of tradition and loyalty more than anything else!). If you're talking flights etc, Exotissimo Travel in Saigon Trade Centre (37 Le Duan) are pretty good.

I'm sorry, I don't have one to recommend but I do have one I suggest you avoid. My wife and I used FIDI Tours in HCMC to visit Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Ha Long Bay. They're economical and dependable but did not deliver on some of the things we paid for, did not disclose certain information to us ahead of time (like that we would be sharing a room with another couple), and promised a couple of sites in the package that we never visited. At one point in Hanoi, our group had to lug our suitcases for about a mile from the restaraunt where we ate to the train station.

I�ve used Exotissimo for several years now for booking air tickets, both internal and international. They�re quite competitive. Train tickets can be purchased at the Saigon Train Station (Ga Sai Gon).

BTW, Exotissimo are on the ground floor of the Prudential Building.

STA Travel near the corner of De Tham and Bui Vien is a place I have used to buy an international air ticket. They are "the world's largest travel company for students and young people" with offices around the world.

I bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok, and I'll just buy my ticket there as tickets are so much cheaper in the 'Kok.
