Hey y'all, has anyone had any experience of this school? I came across an ad they had for a Science teacher, fired off an email of enquiry and received a request for a scan of my passport... No job info or anything useful, mind.

An ex colleague of mine from China started work at this school on the 15th january.

It is an International school in Denpasar, Bali.

Coincidentally my friend is teaching Physics to Year 7 to 10 students.

Apparently they have provided him with a free apartment, utilities, two maids and a very good salary.

He is happy at this stage.

It is normal to ask for a scanned copy of your passport when applying for work Online.

I flew down to Bali for a job interview in high season (during chinese new year). I was offerred a position for much less than is the norm for National Plus schools in Indonesia. I accepted as I am looking to move to Bali and settle down with my Balinese fiance. They refused to tell me how much they were offering for the position until I told them how much I made first (which should have sent up warning flags). Call me stupid but I didn't lie.

Then I get back to Medan and they sent me a contract with all sorts of surprises in it like a 10% retainer per month of your salary, no end of year bonus, no benefits, medical, sick days, nothing... DOh! gotta go, but I'll finish this later.

Jokers indeed.

well yes... jokers indeed, though I'm sure i could come up with a few other names if I wanted to waste any more time on them than I already have.

Just a few other contract surprises that were never mentioned in the interview (apart from the retainer of 10% per month of the salary):

- teachers are expected to hand over their passport to the school office for 'safekeeping'.

- if a teacher wants leave the country whether it be for holiday or emergency, they must fork over a deposit of 'no less than one months salary', otherwise they will refuse to arrange your exit and re-entry permit.

I was promised all sorts of things like a guaranteed salary increase of a specific amount should I choose to resign, holidays and the airfare from Medan to Bali plus Visa run expenses, none of which were mentioned anywhere in the contract.

They'd sent me the contract with a note asking me to sign and send back if I didn't have any questions. After I'd asked that the above mentioned things that I'd been assured I'd get were stipulated in the contract, I got a response from the school regretfully informing me that they could not offer me the position.

You can do what you want, but I've learned some valuable lessons this time around, hopefully they won't have been in vain.

In my opinion, they're scheisters.

Well done. Better to ask the right questions before you are obligated. Especially in the land of dodgy deals.
I'd like a real meat pie for the number of "porky pies" i have been fed in jakarta.
Good luck.

Bedevilled,
wow, that's a bit of a burn...
I got in contact with them again after yaco sent me some helpful info. In my email, I said I wouldn't send my passport details until I found out more about the position, and haven't heard from them since.
It's probably for the best that you're not working there...

Hope you find something that suits you soon - there's bound to be jobs going soon as the new academic year looms... Good Luck.
