Question or concern: I have found a second job with the help of a recruiter in Kaohsiung. I am living here and have an ARC legally with another Bushiban. However I took on more work with this other school but was made to sign a contract, photocopied my ARC, passport and medical certificate, saying that they will deduct taxes from my pay because they are in a competative market and want to represent me legally to any police should they need to. Does this make any sense? I thought having a second job was illegal and that most pay cash for your time anyway. Are they planning to pocket this deduction they will take or pay the recruiter who found this opportunity for me? I've asked why repeatedly and they keep telling me the rules have changed (only recently apparently?)and that teachers can have second jobs as long as they can acquire those legal documents I mentioned.
Have the rules really changed just so recently? Anybody know?
Please help with your advice.....sincerelyJM |

You can have two legal jobs. The rules have changed for this recently. I'm not sure if this is what they were refering to. You may want to ask them if they are getting a second work permit for you to work at their school. If they are, then holding tax is appropriate, as would be asking you to sign a contract. However, if they are not going to sponsor you, then their need for all this info is more dubious. I've heard of "second job" employers using this info to get teachers in deep water with authorities if they quit suddenly. Sounds like they are going to sponsor you, though; hence the need for the medical. Be careful if they are not. You probably should clarify with them exactly what they are doing just to be sure. |
