Here I am a 45 yr. old male who is just trying to get back on his feet after a divorce, with the grand idea in his head to try and start life over again in Thailand as a TESOL teacher. I have my TESOL certificate, teaching licence & specialty in teaching children English, but don't have a degree of any kind due to the fact that my past career was involved in the trades.
My questions are: " Are there any other people out there that have been through a similar situation, & what advice would they give someone who is contemplating such a move"? "Is this dream actually feasable"? I have had 2 job offers from Thailand, but they drop me as soon as they find out I don't have the degree, which is something that I was told not to worry about when applying for teaching jobs. " Can a person actually get by on a teachers salary in Thailand"? Or is having your own business the way to go?

Not having a degree is a problem here. There are two types of schools:

1) Those that care about qualifications and will check up on them. Lie all you want, they'll catch you sooner or later.

2) Those that don't really care about qualifications and won't check on them. Saying you have a BA in whatever is fine. If they ask you "Do you have the original" tell them you lost it sometime over the last 14 years you spent teaching.

But, if you're seriously considering rebranding yourself and staying in Thailand, get a BEd in Australia (cheap, fast, fairly easy) or at home. It'll make a world of difference in your opportunities. And you'll get a chance to play around in Oz, if you care to.

And by the way, you'll find out that once you're here whether you have a degree or not is much less of a problem than it would be trying to get a job from overseas. Which you can forget about for 99% of the jobs here even if you have a degree.

Come first. Buy cellphone. Then try.

Or:

Get BEd. Come here. Buy cellphone. Then try.

Yes, you can GET BY on a teacher's salary in Thailand, but not really prosper.

If you could set up a business that would potentially be more profitable in the long run, but what kind of business do you have in mind?

As for the degree question; there are those [Where's kenkaniff?] that say as long as you have other qualifications it's possible but not easy. Hopefully he'll post something about is.

There is often a lot of discussion about this topic on the board. Check out some other threads in the forum.

For example: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=18003

Also, you might think about other countries like Viet Nam.

Carluk

Travel to Indonesia young man.

Indonesia is all TEFL, TEFL and more TEFL.

A TEFL or similar is far more important than a degree.

GOOD LUCK
