I'm another disgruntled American worker looking to hit the beach and hopefully meet some of those beautiful dark skinned women. Don't need to save any money, would be happy to just break even or go a little in the hole. Don't drink or live an expensive lifestyle- any thoughts? Thanks! |

You should just fly down and visit schools in person. Try Acapulco, Cancun, or Puerto Vallarta. Harmon Hall would be a good start on schools.
Whaddya think Moonraven? |

Guy, there are two threads going here about the same thing -- this one and one with the title Have you worked with them? Both are about Mark Farley's job placement service -- http://www.teach-english-mexico.com/ |

There is no Harmon Hall in Puerto Vallarta, though there are other schools. Harmon Hall Cancun has a good reputation but cost of living is extremely high, as it is in most beach towns. |

Guy, I am not sure I am the right person to speak for Harmon Hall, as there is an enormous variation in quality of product and service as well as treatment of ESL teachers among the almost 100 institutes in Mexico.
However, since the OP's priorities are clear, the hit or miss unpaid pre-service training shouldn't bother him.
As far as beach spots, HH does have a presence in Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Playa del Carmen and as was mentioned, Cancun. |

Actually Moonraven, I thought you would react more strongly to the OP's intentions and priorities.
Sorry OP, but I wouldn't be recommending reputable schools to you for what you plan to do. That's why Harmon Hall tops my list, especially the one in Acapulco.
If Internetworks is worth their salt, they won't be able to help you either. |

Frankly, Guy, his honesty is kind of refreshing. He isn't covering up his lascivious intent with the kinds of rationalizations we've seen so frequently on this forum (giving good value for the low salary, finding oneself, other such b.s.)
And, he won't be here very long....
Harmon Hall usually requires a year's commitment before they will get an FM-3 for a teacher--but that shouldn't stop him. When he's ready to leave, if he's been with them less than a year they'll just deduct the cost of the FM-3 and lawyer's fees from his paycheck (should run about 4500 pesos.) |

haha very true. I hope that's not a dig in my direction...
Having lived and worked in Acapulco, I saw many a teacher with the same intentions as the OP. In the end, it's only the students who suffer. Acapulco and Guerrero in general does not provide a lot of resources to their population by way of education, and since that part of the world has a place in my heart, I hate seeing any more exploitation (sorry OP, I'm speaking generally).
Certainly, Acapulco is the place to meet very lovely dark and light skinned ladies...and guys. |

It was not a dig at you, Guy. I am not that subtle in my digs.
I don't like to see people charged language school prices (especially HH prices!--don't know what they charge now but when I left 6 years ago it was right around 1000 pesos every 4 weeks) to have a "teacher" like the OP either. Many individuals and families are willing to spend half of their income on EFL classes here in Mexico, as they are convinced that education--and learning English--are tickets to the First World.
However, we can't stop folks like the OP from turning up here and giving everybody a bad name. Lord knows I have tried to encourage folks like him to stay in their home countries. And I have refused to hire them when they've turned up on my doorstep.
Now I just hope they get a big dose of...culture shock and go back home. |

It's the game of teacher-got-up-late-didn't-plan-a-lesson
-snicker- Sorry, I couldn't resist. My college buddies and I used to play a similar game involving copious amounts of alcohol and loose change. I never won. |

I see nothing wrong with socializing with locals on the beach during one's free time. If you plan to stay short-term, you most likely won't save any money. In most beach areas, where it's been mentioned that cost of living is high, you'll probably end up going in the hole. Additionally, what you invest in a placement service will put you a lot further in the hole. If you don't have qualifications and/or experience, you'll end up in lower-level schools whether you use a placement service or find them on your own.
I'd like to suggest a couple of options. If you're thinking rather short-term, why not save up some money, take a month or so off from your job, and enjoy a vacation in Mexico? On the other hand, if you really want to teach EFL, then instead of investing your money in a placement service, invest it in some type of teacher training. There are a number of decent, reputable teacher-training courses offered in Mexico, and many (most?) of them offer some type of job placement assistance as well. |
