That is nice for those who have the luxury of a job where they pay your NI. The majority of tefl teachers will have to eat dog food or throw themselves on the state when they get to old to tefl. |

Thanks DMB, that's a useful tip.
If you don't pay it you're entitled to diddly squat should end up back in the UK unemployed and in need.
Are you paying it DMB? What do you think the benefits would be, given that we probably won't be able to get much by way of pension in return?
I'm keen to hear your views. |

You can fill out a form in the UK (can't remember the code) which will tell you what your pension etc status is, and how much you need to pay to top up. I was pleasantly surprised with mine as I opted out of SERPS many years ago whilst still working in UK but can still get the price of a few Efes when I'm old and crumbly! |

Sorry, can I ask too how you went about working out what you had to pay?
PS Isn't offside the side you'd prefer not to have your photo taken from? |

I have to 'fess up. My aunt works for the inland revenue and she sorted it out. However, you should be sent a letter every year saying that you haven't paid your NI and it informs you how much is missing from your contributions. |

Two pounds a week is the self-employed rate. Watch out for the lunacy that your pension will be frozen if you reture to certain countries
For example if you retire to the US you will get annual uprating. If you retire to Canada it is frozen at level paid when you first get it.
Not everyone can pay contributions. You must alraedy have "entered National Insurance" , ie paid some contributions while resident in UK.
I do not think you can pay all the arrears. There is a cut-off after which payments will NOT be accepted. |

What do you think the benefits will be for us 20 or 30 years down the line? Do you think we'll see anything in return? |

Currently the Basic Pension - if you get 100 pwercent - is about 90 quid a week. Worth having. Not much in the UK but ion some places this is MORE than enough to live on !
As to 20 or 30 years from now maybe the Rapture will intervene ?! |
