Hey guys, this has been a really great board. I have found more answers and information here than any where else. But I do have a couple of questions, as I am planning on heading out to Taiwan next month.
First, I graduated from University in December. I don't recieve my actual paper degree until May/June. I do have both offical transcripts and a letter certifying that I have completed all the requirements for my BA. What I am wondering is, will this be enough in Taiwan? Will I be able to get a work permit without my actual degree? I am set on doing everything as legally as possible! Any help/experiences would be greatly appreciated. If it matters, I also have my TESL certificate.
Also, I am planning on coming out on a holiday visa and finding work upon arrival. Now to get a holiday visa, is there anyway around purchasing a return flight? I would like to only get a one-way...as I would obviously not know when I am coming back (I plan on being here at least a year). If a return ticket is necessary for the visa, how did you guys go about doing this? Is it easy to change your return date once in Taiwan?
So many questions, so little time! I really appreciate any answers/info that you guys have. Thanks! |

This has all been answered before on this board. You may need to go back abit further than you have done to date.
Another good source of information that I often recommend is the buxiban.com website.

It won't help with you securing your work permit. You still need an original of your actual degree.
This might help you get a job teaching adults, but generally won't mean much to work with kids, although having said that, things are getting more competitive so it certainly won't hurt.

Legally, yes. In practice it depends a lot upon where you get on the plane, which company you fly with, and how lucky you are when you arrive.
All in all, too many variables for my liking. Just get a return and be done with it. It is cheaper than two one ways anyhow!

You go to a shop and buy it!
Just kidding! The easiest, and I think best way around getting a full return ticket to your home country is to buy a one way flight to Taiwan from where you are, with an outward portion to somewhere nearby such as Hong Kong. You can either cancel the HK portion when you are here and get a partial refund of the money, or keep it active in case you need to do a visa run. Even if you don't use the outbound portion, the cost is probably worth it as it means that you can remain in Taiwan as long as your visas enable you to.
Changing the return dates on a return ticket will depend upon the carrier that you fly and the type of ticket that you buy. Generally speaking, yearly tickets that enable a change of return dates are often the most expensive tickets. |
