What is the best way to travel from Thailand to Phomn Penh.

I will already have a Cambodian visa when I arrive in Thailand.

If you mean best in the absolute sense then fly. Only about 60-70 minutes and hassle free.

There are 3 airlines I think flying, 2 Thai and 1 Cambodian ( maybe 2 )

You can do it overland but it will take a full day. And when I say a full day I mean like 6am - back of midnight.

If you have the money, fly.

If you don't, arrange busses to get there. There are two ways to do this, both take about the same amount of time and cost about the same amount of money. If you're closer to the BTS than to Khao San take a bus from Ekkamai to the border (Poipet crossing) and then arrange a bus from there into Siem Reap / Phnom Phen. If you're closer to Khao San then just arrange a bus from there and save yourself the hassel of making it to Ekkamai, haggling about a bus on the Cambodian side of the border, etc etc.

It'll take a long time by road and portions of the road are still a bit rough (though 99% of it is finished and okey-dokey now).

There are lots of good places to stay in Phnom Phen. "The Lake" is the cheap tourist / brothel area. You can stay in The Walkabout which also has a 24 hour bar, is near the waterfront and near one of PP's main entertainment strips, or you can choose from a wide variety of more up market places.

The riverfront is the nice part of the city, if you're looking for nice.

Err, the bus to Arranyapratet ( border town on the thai side ) goes from Mor Chit bus station does it not?

Just a quick follow up to bluffer's last reply.

He's right. (unless there's another bus from Ekkamai which I haven't heard about?)

The Bangkok - Aranyaprathet bus leaves from The Northern Bus Terminal (a.k.a. Mo Chit II / pronounced Mo Chit Song, in Thai) which is a 10 minute taxi ride (~70 Baht) from the Mo Chit Skytrain Station.

All taxi drivers will understand Mo Chit Song, so it's not a bad idea to memorize this ...

and you have just learned the number 2 in Thai.

I teach a company class in Kabinburi, so I take the Aranyaprathet bus a lot.

Here are a few additional details:

When you get to The Northern Bus Terminal, enter on the ground floor and go to Window 30 to purchase your ticket. A ticket all the way to the border is roughly 184 Baht and there's a bus leaving every 30 minutes. When you get your ticket, you can then go outside to the departure platform and wait @ Gate 121.

It's smart to request a window seat since you'll be sitting directly under the aircon vents. It can get really warm on those long bus rides. Trust me on the window seat.
