I'm an American teacher thinking of heading to Taiwan. I have a non-native Thai wife who has a masters and excellent English skills as well as 10 years experiance as a college instructor in Thailand. Any chance she can teach English or Science in Taiwan?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Experience won't really be a factor; it hardly ever is here. Does she have an American passport? If so, she is just as employable as anyone else here. However, her Asian appearance--and Thai accent, if she's got one, may work against her. If you are legally employed here, she can be here with you legally as a dependant and she may be able to teach students privately or else under the table in a kindergarten. The chances of her getting a job teaching English are far better than the chances of her landing a job teaching science. That's the same for all of us here, regardless of background. |

Unfortunately the people of Taiwan and more specifically the democratically elected government treat all Thai people as one of the lowest forms of sub-human foreigners on Taiwan.
The government encourages this mindset by implementing racist policies and regulations that are a blatant violation of their human rights.
The darker the skin the more stronger the prejudice.
The people of Taiwan believe blond hair and blue eyed foreigners are the best English teachers regardless of qualifications or even knowledge of the English language.
Welcome to Taiwan.

Due to her ethnic background she may be paid a lower rate than her counterparts of European lineage. She may also have to look a little harder to find a job too. As to Thai's being treated as untermenschen (sp?), anyone with darker skin is treated differently by the Taiwanese, including fellow Han Chinese. If you aren't fish belly, three days in the grave, nosferatu white then yo are obviously a poor labourer. I would have to say though, that the Filipinos are treated worse than any other group in Taiwan. |

For what it is worth, I agree entirely with Wood. |

That's not just Taiwan. That is in Japan (and Korea), too-I liked that "fishbelly pale" remark...In Japan, it got to the point where I just got sick of seeing it.
It got to the point where I didn't want to look at any of the foreigners, because they looked sickly (and desperate.) I actually wore SPF 40 there to try to whiten myself to get work. Then I gave up, and went home, where everyone complained I looked too damn pale. Luckily that is old news now.
In Taiwan, at least the teachers have like, tans and stuff. (sadly enough I am not joking with ANY of these comments.)
So anyway, you will probably get some advice to take her to Japan, where they are more open, that is where Sperling took his Thai wife, I say NOO, stay in Taiwan, and if that doesn't work try Korea, PM me for schools, but do not get disillusioned and even begin to think about taking her to "modern" Japan. |
