Hi all. I'm moving to Ankara in March and would like to know what peoples' experiences are of working in Ankara, any recommendations on schools, what to expect in terms of pay and conditions and just what it's like living and working in Ankara.
Have spent time in Ankara already so know the lie of the land on a limited basis, but would like to know your opinions.
And if you're living in Ankara now, let me know and maybe I'll see you in a month or two... |

Why are you moving to Ankara? Do you have a job to go to? |

Although most people would opt for Istanbul, Ankara has a lot going on in terms of art, film and entertainment, nice shopping facilites, good cafes, and the chance to visit places over a two day period such as cappadocia, safranbolu, and even Istanbul etc..... It is modern and liberal, for the most part. It is diverse (going to a hamam in Ulus or sipping a vodka martini on Tunali) and can be quite interesting. Less chaotic than most capital cities (which I'm sure you noticed if you have already been there). It's not the dull boring city that everyone makes out if you get out and join in things and make friends - both Turkish and foreign.
In terms of money and conditions - it really does depend. But there are not so many horror stories about working there. You may have to take shared housing or take a partial payment towards your own place. Money will probably be around the $1000 mark but overtime may be possible. It depends which language school you work in. If it is a university or high school/ college you are going to then most probably everything will be covered but again it all depends. If you know where you will be teaching it may help posters to give you more concrete information about the work aspect of things. Other than that, if you have been there and were not put off then you will probably have an enjoyable time there.
Good luck! |

Thanks Vre. Yes I greatly enjoyed the "cafe society" style of Ankara on my last visits and had a good time there, so am looking forward to coming back. Thanks for the advice about working conditions etc. No, I don't have any work lined up yet but have written to all the schools I know about in Ankara, so am hoping for something positive before I leave.
Faustino, the above answers one of your questions. The answer to the other is that I'm moving to Ankara to be with my partner. She already has an established career in Ankara, and I am reaching the end of a career break/change so it was easier for me to make the move (and I couldn't wait to get out of the UK again!), and we both like Ankara so looking forward to getting out there! |
