People talk of decent sallary at IEU. Is that like $1500/mo, or what? Without actual figures, decent is all relative.

Uh no a decent efl salary in Izmir is nothing like 1500 USD a month. Sorry for the disappointment.

Not disappointed... just proving a point. Which you just proved again.

All I am saying is that it is impossible to get any clear info about this place. People say they pay a decent wage... well what does that mean? Then I wanted more specifics as to an approximate figure so I threw out the number $1500 US, just to try and get an answer. You (ekmekparasi) replied with the "sorry to disappoint you, decent is not $1500 US" comment, but also did not give any clear information.

This is a dead topic. I mean no ill will, just a wee bit frustrated. I'll find out for myself if I apply. Thanks.

I work in Izmir (not at IEU) and earn in excess of $1500 (equivalent) a month, I always understood that teachers at IEU were better paid than me, perhaps I'm wrong.

I'm curious.

To all those who have posted opinions and conjecture on this forum, here are some facts to consider:
IUE has two websites - www.ieu.edu.tr and www.iue.teflturkey.com on which you can find all the information about the institution that you need.
Native speakers in the School of Foreign Languages earn approx. 1500 USD per month on average. There is a salary scale based on qualifications and experience. Other conditions of employment can be found on the second of the two sites above.
The Teacher Development Unit actually has five trainers and is the largest and most active unit of its kind in Turkey other than the unit at Bilkent University. All the trainers hold DELTA and/or MA qualifications. Three of them are approved Cambridge ESOL CELTA trainers and one is a CELTA assessor. The School ran its first CELTA course last summer and plans to add ICELT and DELTA to its menu of teaching awards in the near future.
The Teacher Development Unit runs orientation courses for new teachers, workshops, seminars and short courses for all teachers, hosts seminars given by visiting speakers which are open to all teachers in the region, and manages an ongoing observation/peer observation programme.
Three members of the unit have been Directors of Studies at English Fast schools in different cities at different times.
Four members of the unit are actively employed as trainers by the British Council which now runs teacher development courses based at the university.
There are now 139 teachers in the School of Foreign Languages, including teachers of languages other than English, around 30% of whom are native speakers.

That is all well and good but what about the private lives of the trainers?

I received an email a while ago, asking me to recommend places in Izmir. After suggesting IUE, this was the reply I got:

'Thank you for your recommendation. I went to an interview last month. They were not interested in me. They told me that would let me know the next day the result of the interview, but they did not call so I called them. They told me that they had changed their mind and would be getting a local Turkish English teacher. Later I found out they only took in "white" teachers.'

I know several people working at IEU, and don't consider this to be a true reflection of the attitude of this institution. However, I thought I would share this as some interviewees may be getting a negative impression of the university.

This doesn`t surprise you does it?

A pal of mine did his tefl course somewhere in London and on the last day they had some ding dong from Turkeng (a cowboy recruiter) come in and offer them jobs in Turkey. This pal of mine has a Turkish name because his parents are from Cyprus but was born in London and knows about as much Turkish as your average English Timer. Turkeng told him that employers in Turkey want:

''People in their twenties with blonde hair and blue eyes.'' My pal had none of the three qualities.

He later got a job in Istanbul but left after 3 or 4 months because he realised that starting a new life wasn`t feasible and that he wasn`t accepted as a Turk.
