Browsing the English teacher job ads today, I came across a vacancy at a 'culture company' whose "main service is to cooperate with Beijing Police force for preparation for 2008 Beijing Olympic" (sic).
Here was the ad:
English Teacher (February 9/05)
teaching New Interchange
capable of speaking Chinese
White American
having classes in the evenings and at weekends
How heartening it is to discover that Beijing police are preparing to welcome all creeds, colours and races to the capital city in 2008 by specifying they only want to sit in a class with a white teacher.
I hope the person who gets this job points out to their employer that learning English is more than reciting the right words - it is about understanding the outside world and being comfortable with everyone.
My complaint to the company was met with sympathy but the underlying message was they were running a business. Judging by the English in the advert, it seems like quality of English teaching as well as ethical codes take a back seat - money is all that matters. |

Does it really matter that the Beijing cops are doing what they are doing when the same thing is happening in the rest of the country? Perhaps, in the eyes (ears) of some, English spoken by others is anything but.
Fifty years from now, Beijing will probably be clamouring for English teachers from Russian, India or Brazil.
Or maybe America will be clamouring for English teachers from China...who knows?
Remember how Rome once ruled the world. Now, it effectively rules parts of the underworld...etc etc etc. |

The racism is a real setback, because such a job position is ideal in my books. Police English would be such an eye-opening experience, you could learn tons!

LA - my only question is this: Do you think I will need a Z-Visa for this position? I've been teaching in China for the last two years with an F-Visa (because it personally suits me) and I read somewhere, on this forum, that there is a lot of tolerance for that sort of thing in Beijing. Would you recommend I give it a shot?
And, if so, do you personally know of any good attorneys in Beijing: preferably someone with pretty good English?
(Sorry, I know I am terrible sometimes. I just couldn't resist. I wouldn't be surprised if Santa just crossed me off his list this time for good!)

Somebody should ask them if the ad says this because the only foreigners they're expecting to arrest are white Americans!
(from Kurochan, a white American) |
