I've been told that I need a Z visa to work in china, logical enuf. but will the chinese embassy/consulate issue a Z visa, if u haven't found a job yet? from what i read, it's a really bad idea to apply/accept a position on the net w/o actually checking out the place. somewhat of a catch-22 now. what should I do?

it's a bit of a leap of faith but it should be Ok if you do your homework before coming. google will be a good friend for that purpose.

Also, try and ask to speak to former/current teachers if you can. You won't be officially employed by the school until you arrive here and sign your contract anyways.

Sorry to be a little unfeeling here but you are asking the WRONG question. No one can apply for a VISA first, then start job-hunting. Where in the world can this be done? In your home country??? I don't think so!

The work visa is granted only when the authorities are satisfied that you are the ideal candidate for a job in the domestic market for which no local person can be recruited.

This is a very straitforward and reasonable logic; adhere to it as foreign immigrants to your country have to adhere to it as well.

Agreed, but I think this problem can be solved fairly easily. He can come over on a tourist visa and look for work, when a suitable job match is found the Z can be granted.

You're right, although I can't help but think of an exception - international students. At the university I attend now, such students are prohibited from working off-campus. This is rather unfair. Since they already can compete freely on campus for jobs, I don't see what difference it would make if they did the same off-campus.

Mind you, this is from the perspective of a polyglot society (Canada) where "foreigners" don't really exist as such, and hold no real distinct advantage or disadvantage in the job market. In my view, immigrants or international students are treated equally.

This might explain, in part, why other Canadians take this same view abroad and think they can freely traipse around for jobs as they are 'on par' with locals. But in terms of global social realities, Canada is more the exception than the rule.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I see that the duration of stay for the tourist visa for an American is 30 days. If you get a double-entry tourist visa is the duration of stay 60 days? 30 and 30? Or is it 30 days total regardless of the number of entries?

It would normally mean you could enter the country twice, staying up to the thirtieth day, each time.

Will immigration give me problems if I enter on a 30 day tourist visa and my return ticket is not for 90 days? Actually I am going through a recruiter because I only have 3 months to work but if he seems fishy I might look somewhere else once I am in China. I just wanted to know if immigration would not let me in when I only have a 30 day tourist visa.
