Hey, I did a search on this forum but didn't find the info I'm looking for. I'm wondering what "official" documents are needed/useful in getting a job. Are they going to want to see my ORIGINAL birth certificate, ORIGINAL TEFL certificate and/or my ORIGINAL diploma? Or can I just show them copies of these? Any other documents I might need? I'm wondering if they're going to want to see my CELTA "diploma" because I can't locate it right now and it'll take some time and money to get a copy from Cambridge.
Are they going to want to keep photos of me? Will I need official passport photos for anything once I'm in Taiwan? For the ARC or something like that?
I think this kind of info would be useful to anyone coming over for the first time... thanks...

This has all been covered before, but I can appreciate that it may be hard to find as there is a lot of info on this site.

Reputable schools will, less reputable schools may let you get by without. Let me elaborate. It a requirement upon the schools to verify the original documents and send in copies of these with the application. In making your application the school declares that they have viewed the originals. If they didnt see the originals and the documents were later found to be fake, then the school would have to accept some of the repercussions. Good schools therefore protect themselves by insisting upon the originals. One point here, the schools need to see these originals but do not need to keep them nor send them in to the government. Let the school take copies if they want, but dont let them keep any of your original documents. They dont need to keep the originals.

You wont need it unless you want to apply for a job that will offer you more for having this qualification. This is between you and the school so I would recommend coming without it and you could always send away for a new copy if you find that the school will pay you more if you have it. That way you will have a month to prepare it before your first pay day.

Yes, you will need lots of photos. I got the negative for mine and just use this to get reprints of 10 to 15 every now and again. This way I dont age in the pics Wink

How does that work, getting prints from your passport photo negative? Does it turn out just like the original? That's pretty easy to do in photo shops? Did I list all the official documents I'd need- birth cert and university degree? Anything else?

I never brought an original due to sending one to Korea and getting it back as wrinkled as a two hundred year elephant. Get it verified by your local consulate. The consulate sends a copy to your university and checks. A good school will/should check this out. Most of the better schools are aware of this procedure.

You need to go into the photo shop and get them to take the photos. You buy the photos plus the negative. You just need to ask for the negative. In future cases you just take the negative into any photo shop and order reprints just the same as you do any other photos. It is more expensive the first time around, but if you ever need extras it works out cheaper than using machines all the time. Then again, I guess if you got 20 or so prints the first time around then it would work out economical in the first instance.

You do not mention specifically that you have a degree. If you do, you do not absolutely need a copy of your TESL diploma as it is seldom a requirement for jobs and is not needed for work permit purposes. If you only have a two year post secondary diploma, you will need a copy of your TESL certificate because you need either a four year degree or a two year diploma plus a TESL to get a work permit as an English teacher. If you have neither a degree nor a two year college diloma, your TESL is useless as you will not qualify for legal work here.

So it comes down to: BA degree? You don't need to order another copy of your TESL.

Two year college AA degree or diploma? You will need that TESL.

No degree or diploma? Stay at home.

I suspect you have one of the former two credentials as CELTA has program entry restrictions, don't they?

Yes, I have a four year degree. I was just wondering in terms of proving to whoever that I got a CELTA... I just don't want to lose a job opportunity because they need to see my original certificate or something like that... thanks for your help...
