Hello. I just have a few questions. First of all I understand that with a WH visa your not really supposed to have a job lined up in Japan when you go. Although I did hear that if you do have a job lined up, just don't tell the japanese embassy otherwise they will turn you down for the WH visa. I have considered working for Nova. My only question is, will Nova pick you up at the airport when you arrive? Also, which other companies will be willing to pick you up? Also, I hear that most teachers on a WH visa will most likey have to fly in, and find a job as soon as they get there. Is it really that easy to get hired off the street? Also, if you do walk into a country like that and you can't speak their language nor can you read it, how exactly would you find your way around without getting lost? I also hear that it's very expensive to live in Japan. Working there with a WH visa, will you get a salary high enough to maintain a good lifestyle and have money left over when you return to your home country? Thanks for your time.
Jared

p.s. Can someone give me the websites for the major english school companies there? Companies such as JET and Nova (etc).

Hi Jared! I've just joined this community, but I did happen to notice your post.
I'm not sure about much where the visas are concerned. I only know that I have one and I did everything I had to do to get it. Laughing
Anyhow, I'm not sure about NOVA, but I do know that AEON Corp picks you up at the aiport (that's who I'm going to be working for), and I believe people from the JET Program pick you up at the airport.
I've also heard that it's very expensive to live in Japan, however, when I was there in November I discovered why many foreigners say so. It is expensive if you want to buy Western food all the time, Western products, etc. But if you stick to Japanese diets, and try not to buy too many clothes while you're over there, it shouldn't be too hard to stay in your budget with the salary that many companies give you.

It is very hard to answer that. I have heard of people who spent 90 days looking on a tourist visa only to go home without a job and with far less money in their pockets than when they started. A lot depends on your resume and ability to interview, as well as what city you choose and what time of year you come. As a safe bet, I would say plan on looking for a month or two before getting something.

The major cities have a lot of bilingual signs in public transportation, so getting around the cities themselves is not so hard. Finding lodging is more critical, I would think. I am a big proponent of planning ahead, so my advice is to find out the likely places where you might stay before you leave home. Ask here, or look at online ads in English.

As you might suspect, this question gets asked a lot. My usual response is, What do you call a "good lifestyle"? Typical FT salaries are about 250,000 yen/month, and you will use half of that for basic needs (rent, food, phone, insurance, utilities). So, you have to plan on doing everything else in life with 125,000 yen/month left over. If you eat more than usual, your grocery bill will eat into this a bit. If you go to bars and clubs twice a week, you can expect to spend 30,000 to 50,000 yen/month easily. If you want satellite TV, magazine subscriptions, lots of DVD/CD/movie rentals, etc. you will obviously have to pay for them. Many people are enamored with the culture when living in a foreign land, and they see it as an opportunity to travel and sightsee. Working FT, you won't have that much of a chance in most cases, and when you are free, so is everyone else in Japan, so the travel related costs go up 2 or 3 fold.

You don't have to live like a monk here, but unless you have serious bills back home to pay, you should expect to have about 70,000-100,000 to play around with every month.

Here are a couple more links to add to your list of the big employers.
ECC http://www.japanbound.com/index.html
Berlitz http://www.berlitz.com/default.htm?ISO=en
James English School www.jesjapan.com

P.S. JET is not a "school company". It is a government sponsored program.
