As you may or may not recall I am coming to Japan on 31st March and getting excited. Last night, however, I woke up in a cold sweat when I realised that I may have to foresake Marmite to make the move. You have to understand; Marmite is my crack cocaine and I am not sure how I will cope. What's the deal then, do I really have to get it shipped out or is there any chance of finding it in Japan?

Bring a big jar with you. I have found it in various different shops in Tokyo, but supply isn't consistant. You can get it from the Brit Shop of the Foreign Buyers Club though, just order a week or so in advance (and pay a bit more!). Vegemite is easier to get, but it just doesn't do it for me!

Yeah, I thought Vegemite might be easier to get but the thought of eating it makes me......uneasy...

or put a truck load of salt in your shoe polish and spread it on your toast, should do the trick.

ah and so the age old debate over marmite and vegemite opens in japan of all places. funny to hear you slag vegemite coz whenever i visit the relos in england i dread the thought of them offering me marmite. how on earth can you eat that stuff etc etc etc.

vegemite til i die....^^

speaking of which, some said vegemite is easier to get in tokyo/japan....where can you get it in tokyo? i'll be bringing some with me but to know supplies are out there....life is good

Ok... I've heard people talking about searching for vegimite and marmite in Japan before; eventually they decided to have someone from home ship it to them.

But my question is.... What the heck is it???

I make special trips to Lawrence Kansas to get jars of Borvril, which is as far as I can remember, a slighty runny version of Marmite. I've yet to ever see Marmite in the States. I would take a jar of that and about five Wispa bars up to the register. A tear comes to my eye when I think how I will never have a Wispa again. DAMN you Cadbury Inc.! But I digress... Spread very thinly on toast with butter, it's really good. It tastes a bit like roast beef on toast. But much like wasabi sauce, a little goes a long way. Spread it on too thick and you'll barf.

Oh yes, and speaking of things you dread being offered as food in England. It's those weird little fried cherry tomatoes that get included in your breakfast fry-up. Much like alcohol before 5:00, vegetables especially red ones should not be seen or heard from before lunch-time.

Marmite is a non-issue. Most contracts in Japan are annual or two-year ones at the most. A large jar of marmite in the hands of an experienced vet will last at least as long as that if not longer.

Surprisingly I can buy Marmite on the Big Island at my local supermarket. I cannot imagine why they have it on the shelf.

In Tokyo I have spotted Marmite in National Azabu, the little shop in Ebisu station near the top level of the JR lines (sorry can't remember the name, but they have lots of foreign foods), Tanakaya in Mejiro (next to the McDonalds), and the Garden in Seibu in Ikebukuro. But just as quickly as it appears, it can also disappear from the shelf. Vegemite can be found in all of these stores too. The Britshop of the FBC is usually your best bet for a continuous supply. Maybe you can get a standing order.
