I'm british born, Aussie national and married to a Kiwi...
I had been eating English Marmite all my life until 1993 when a friend introduced me to Vegemite and started using the good old Aussie spread instead...
In 1998 when I was backpacking in New Zealand I was having breakfast in a youth hostel and tried the New Zealand version of Marmite, I haven't looked back since.
So imho, New Zealand Marmite (made by Sanitarium) is by far better than the English Marmite and the Aussie Vegemite.

You will probably not find it in Japan tho.

I'm a Vegemite man myself... My friends always look at me funny as I'm Canadian but yet love Vegemite!

Couldn't get it for the longest time here in Japan until I asked an Ozzy friend to bring some back for me when visiting home, as well as writing my mom back in Canada to ship me some (yes, you can definitely buy it in Canada).

So now, I have 2 squeeze-tubes and a full jar of it. I ain't running out of it anytime soon.

FYI, aside from eating it on toast, it's great for cooking with and it does a fantastic job of preventing hangovers!!!!! Amazing stuff, Vegemite.

If you have any doubts, go here: http://grudnuk.com/vegemite/ (Vegemite for Morons -- whose author claims: A step-by-step guide to using the greatest spread in the world.
(If you don't agree, you're just an uncultured barbarian, and probably a Seppo.)
)

or here: http://www.vegemite.com.au (Official website).

This topic borders religion for many, so I'd better quite while I'm ahead.

Guys, I really am Marmite till I die.

Sheep - not too sure. I've seen people selling 125gram jars for six quid on the internet. *beep* that. I feel, however, that my position may be subject to change.

You are all sadly misinformed. Promite is the king and all others are pretenders to the throne .

Marmite is a non-issue. Most contracts in Japan are annual or two-year ones at the most. A large jar of marmite in the hands of an experienced vet will last at least as long as that if not longer.

I've just finished the largest pot size you can get (one you buy from a cash and carry) in about 2 months. If that.

as I said, experienced vets only. My wife used to offer training courses after making a jar of vegemite last nearly 2 years. She ate it almost every day too. It's all in the wrist apparently...
