Cute, Shmooj. Very cute. I have taken to unfurling my soiled condoms all the way down before throwing them out now. The housewives in the area all seem to raise their eyebrows when they walk by me now. Teehee.
You're right, though. It's perfectly acceptable for others to know what your discarded items are. It's quite alright for neighbours to root through your garbage. There are no psychiatric issues to these people at all. I'm at fault for having privacy concerns. Japan is perfect. Anyone who questions the more insane aspects of this culture should leave immediately.

You are starting to understand now Roam. Soon the Borgs, I mean the Japanese, will have you assimilated. What is the word for "personal freedom" in Japanese? Is it "selfish"?

Roam: If I might offer an additional suggestion to your unrolling soiled condoms before throwing them out with your gomi... (And this goes for everyone else too)....

Ensure that in EACH and EVERY gomi (that's 2 collections a week in my neighborhood) you've discarded a minimum of one full box of condoms in the manner described above. If you have positive proof that the local gomi Nazis ARE in fact going through YOUR trash, increase that to 2 boxes twice a week.

Shouldn't be that hard... (er... sorry. No pun intended). Embarassed

Funny how these threads can turn onto topics way off base from the original discussion. On TESOL's advice I brought condoms from home as the Japanese condoms tend to be too snug for we Western boys.
I was joking about unrolling them all the way. Trying to make another point about our discarded items relating to our privacy.

Right. Anyone who questions aspects of inanity in any host culture should leave the planet immediately... or if the Space Shuttle is still grounded, start their own. I'm sure your culture will be totally inanity-free Laughing

Seriously man, you have to lighten up if you want to be happy there. What is actually happening is that your encounter with a new culture is making you ask questions. This is a good thing. But you'd learn more if you asked questions more about why your own culture makes you react that way than why the culture hosting you is that way. You are malleable. Japan isn't.

Just put them out late at night when no one`s around. We`re supposed to sign ours but I`ve never done it. If you`re that worried about people going through it, just rip up anything with an address on it. My rubbish is usually one part food and ten parts stupid flyers that I get through my door in droves.

Re: condoms - even the `big boys` with the horse on the front are too small. The ones with the Union Jack just about do, but my favourite are the `US Marine Ultra Ultra Large`. Like fcuking balloons. Oh, for Durex.

I hope nobody who knows me reads this.x

I got them sent to me. Man, it's embarassing to ask someone to mail them to you.

Shmooj, I'm just kidding about how concerned I am about this whole signing the garbage thing. I should indicate I'm joking, I suppose. Text doesn't really convey it. I've never signed the bags. I just toss it on the pile. Nobody says anything to me.
Funny condom story. I went to Walmart just before I came over here and bought over $100 worth of condoms, at Wal Mart prices. After the female clerk takes the fifteen minutes to ring all the condoms through (I went for variety) she says to me as I'm walking away, "Sometimes we get tired."
