my plan is to fly from US to Bangkok for 5 or so weeks then fly one way to Japan. I may need to check into it and see if Japan will alow me in without a return ticket...... so I was wondering if it is better to go to Bangkok and buy a ticket while there to Japan instead of buying all the tickets (US-Bangkok-Japan) in the US (online)..
Its just that I remember there being so many freakin travel agencies there on KSR and on several of the islands.

It's the carriers you generally have to worry about (at least coming to Thailand) Immigration generally don't mind on arrival.

I'd hazard to guess that Japan is the same as Thailand and as long as you have a 'proper' Visa (i.e. not an on arrival one) it's okay to have a one way ticket!

As long as you arrive here in Thailand on a 60 day tourist Visa or Non-imm Visa) you'll be fine. Like I said it's in the States where you'll need to worry as the carriers basically have to bring you back (free) if Thailand Immigration refuses you entry (although this won't happen!). Saying that 9 time out of 10 the carriers don't care, but sometimes they do.

Honestly, it all comes down to a crapshoot of whether you get some anal-retentive ignorant agent at the check in desk wanting proof of onward travel.

Like the previous poster said safer if you get a Tourist visa since it's an invitation to enter the country. That may be enough to convince the aforementioned anal-retentive agent. Thailand itself has no regulation stating you need a round trip ticket if you've got a tourist visa, one way is fine. You�d need one anyway to stay 5 weeks unless you want immigration hassles and fines

Tell them you are exiting overland. That often does the trick.

So now I am deciding between buying these tickets online, all at once:

Dallas to BKK to Japan to BKK
or
Dallas to BKK to Japan.

My final destination is Japan but I am not sure if I will be asked to show any proof of leaving while at imigrations.
I wonder if I should spend a bit more to not be hasseled in Imigration, then again, I don't think I have actually been asked to show any proof of departure at any airport that I have been to while going thru imigration while arriving.

I think you'll be fine. It's no Immigration (at least not here in Thailand) that's the problem it will be getting on the plane at Dallas, but as you have a flight out of Thailand to Japan you'll be okay that end. And personally I can't see the carrier this end giving you grief about going to Japan with out a return ticket, as I'm guessing by your name, that you're Japanese?

When I returned to Japan, I had a tourist visa but the immigration officer let me in without a return flight. I spoke to him in Japanese and he looked through my pass port and saw the many Japanese stamps and so let me in. If this is your first time to Japan, you will need a return flight.

This is what I decided on:
DFW-BKK BKK-KIX KIX-Seoul. I just won't use the Seoul one. This should cover all bases.
Anyone disagree?
