Hi Kevin,
A good example is the Thailand one created by Kent F. Kruhoeffer:
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=12862
Feel free to put one together, and then email me at:
[email protected]
I'll them make it into a Stickey at the top of the forum.
All the best,
Dave Sperling

How about we put all collective knowledge and experience that we all have and make this a great source of infomation for Working and Living in China......?
Suggestion:
We can work together to create a STICKY of China-related INFO, as Kent F. Kruhoeffer has done for the Thailand and Russia Forums.
Sticky: ---< The Master Index Thailand >---
Sticky: ---< The Master Index Russia & CIS >---

I love it when I get quoted!
Ok....good idea!
First we need....a very large pot of coffee!
Then......Oh I got it!.....a list of subjects......the most common problems that we all face from day 1!
I'm thinking........
BTW I hate it when I see a bloody mistake in my typing and then it gets quoted! :oops:Thank god I never became a doctor.....can you imagine forgeting to take out that retractor that you used and only remembering it when you see the follow up Xray Post Op the next day!

In our Community, there's a wealth of:
*experiences
*hard-knocks
*wisdom
*already-written words
If the Elders choose to do so, our Community can create an invaluable Master Index China, as Kent did for the Russia and Thailand Forums.

Kent F. Kruhoeffer Master Index Man for Thailand & Russia/CIS has kindly responded to a Request for Suggestions. We need someone ready-willing-able to play the Role of an Anchor for this project. For many reasons, I don't qualify. Any Volunteers?

Feel free to repost these little tidbits on the China Forum. I feel kinda funny posting it not knowing anyone there.
First, creating a Master Index of links is rather easy. After it gets the 'sticky status' from Dave (which he has already offered) you're all set.
The thread remains at the top of the forum for easy access by all, and the URL to that sticky never changes, making it easy to post the link on other websites, or for link-exchanges, etc.
As far as I know, there is no way to give a group password for such a thing, since the OP is the only person (other than the MODs) who can enter & edit that post.
That's no problem, however! Since you're thinking of making this a group project, here's how it would work:
Step 1: Somebody makes the first post; maybe an index of China-Related links like the one suggested by G-Stringed Avenger?
Step 2: Other posters within the China Forum then add on individual contributions to that first post in the form of normal replies (just like on any other thread here at Dave's) and those posters would retain editorial control of their individual contributions.
In essence, you create a pyramid of individual topics joined together into a 'sticky', each of which is managed and edited by its respective author. Thus, there is no need for a group password. You edit your page, Poster X edits his page, Poster Z edits her page, and so on.
For example, the China Master List might look something like this:
Part I - Index of China-Related Links
Part II - Job Tips & TEFL FAQ
Part III - Language Schools in China
Part IV - Culture, Film and Chinese Literature
Part V - Maps of China
etc, etc, etc ...
Each of those Parts would 'belong' to one poster, as mentioned above, and he or she would be in charge of maintaining and editing that individual Part.
Here are a few general tidbits:
There's no problem adding graphics and/or photos, but be aware that the more graphics and photos you have, the more time you'll spend on maintenance. These days, websites pop up and crash into the toilet faster than I change underwear, and it can be really frustrating when a website crashes and you see those little red Xs all over your page.
Be aware that there is also a megabyte limit to each individual post. When you reach that limit, you'll know it, since the stuff you just posted will disappear off the bottom of the page. If you look at The Master Index Thailand and right-click properties on Part I, you'll see what that limit is ... since Part I of the Thailand Index is now completely FULL.
Photos are the main culprit since they take up a lot of space on a computer. I have a total of 5 colour photos on the Thailand Index, spread out over 3 parts, and that's plenty, imho. Having lots of photos & animated graphics also makes the page load more slowly, fyi.
When adding text, you can write until your hand falls off.
OK - that's all I can think of for now.
Let me know if you have any specific questions. I'm happy to help out in any way I can.
Warm wishes,
Kent F. Kruhoeffer |
