Wow, thats some scam, if theyd managed to pull it off.
That title doesnt ring a bell at all, dmb. Can you remember who the author was? Its a pretty provocative title too, for such a book given the connotations of seven veils. Was it any good?

I can't remember the author. I think she was North African Arabic. I do remember enjoying it. After Eastenders tonight I'll do a bit of googling and try and find out

i am a muslim but dont pray 5 times a day just trying to go to mosque on Fridays and fasting in Ramadan....i sometimes drink and my wife is not covered and we do not have many covered women in our family....I don't believe that women in Turkey wear headscarf because it is a political sign....think you wear headscarf and that coat in the middle of August..Which political power can make these women( thy are not few)wear them?I think a woman has the right to wear what she chooses....This problem started in 1997 when N.Erbakan ( religious man) was the P.M. and it was my last year at uni. Before that there was no problem , just in one day everything changed and some of the girls had to leave school and some of them had to enter without head scarf.....

moustache thing is funny because if you hava Zapata moustache it means you are a nationalist..if your moustache is thin you are religious and if it is(wide and full) on your lip,you are a communist

N. African feminist suggests either Nawal el Saadawi or Fatima Mersini (sp?). Are you serious about Eastenders? I thought I was the only one to publicly admit to following it. Or are you taking the Michael? In which case my excuse (ahem) explanation is that I follow it for purely sociological reasons.

I am deadly serious about Eastenders. About 18 minutes to go. The next week should be really interesting. 2 main characters get killed in the same episode.( yes I read Eastenders websites)

whynotme, I remember my husband explaining all that stuff about mustaches to me. Amazing cultural stuff that you would have no clue about unless you're an insider.

(OK, maybe I'm pushing the sociological analysis a bit now in an effort to convince, but it's still valid)

Putting Eastenders aside for a minute I think the book was Mernissi, Fatima. Beyond the Veil: Male-Female Dynamics in Modern Muslim Society. Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press, revised ed., 1987.
But I'm not 100% sure, but it rings a bell. Is she N. African?
Back to Eastenders. If you are sitting on the edge of your chair I think it's best not to tell you. You might fall off it.
(If you go to the bbc website you can watch the final scene of X's death- I wouldn't want to spoil it for you-how's your will power?)

Of course. Yes, that makes sense. Great book for it's time. And yes she is North African - Moroccan or Algerian I think.

That's just mean! Especially after tonight.
I take it this is for the whole 20th anniversary.
The reason I'm so into Eastenders is that it's the only soap I watched right from the start. In fact I remember watching it with a Croatian friend of my mum's who, at the end of the half hour said "was that in English?" - my first lesson in culture and language thanks to Eastenders. Laughing

I remember the first episode. A virtual Efes for anyone who can remember the three people who broke the door down to Reg's flat to find him dead(it was Nick Cotton who killed him)

Yes, those good old days, with the 80s hairstyles and clothes.
I do remember at least one of the three although I can't remember his name - make it a virtual glass of Dikmen rather than Efes and my brain may be prompted into action.
OK here's one for you - can you name all five characters who (until very recently) have been around since the beginning? I think it's just five.

Den, Arthur and Ali found Reg's body. (Okay, I cheated and looked at the website...I've only been watching since 1993 so I have to read it in order to be fully versed in EastEnderology.)

Let me just add that I'm deeply enjoying the intellectual conversation going on here. Unfortunately, I can only contribute to the EastEnders tangent. But please do keep it up so I learn something in between episodes of my soap.

Ok I haven't cheated(I've got my eye on you Irish) Are you sure about having 5 original characters? Pauline, Den, Ian, Dot and....
I'll let someone else check it out. Top gear extra has just come on. Followed by football. (OOps wrong thread)

It's great isn't it? Where else can one get a discussion of Eastenders and Islamic feminism in just one post, never mind one thread.
OK, dmb owes you a virtual Efes (assuming he's going to permit the cheating to pass). What about the five characters? Although having been seriously reflecting on it I'm wondering if it's actually four.

(Edited to add) I've just seen your post dmb and the one I wasn't sure about being in the first episode is Dot, so there are five (the clue is in my earlier post Wink ).

I believe ImanH is referring to Sharon -- right?

As for cheating -- hey, it's what Den would've done. But I didn't cheat this time, I swear! Now may I have that Efes please?
