Has anyone been to Iberagi?
I will be teaching in Iberagi (dunno exactly where yet but I will be based in the South of Iberagi) and I don't know anything about the area.

Is that anywhere near Ibaragi? Sometimes referred to as Ibaraki?

IMHO it's quite a rural prefecture by Japanese standards. I believe the biggest city is Mito(which is also the capital) has a population of just over 260 000. http://www.city.mito.ibaraki.jp/english/profile/mito.htm

Tsukuba City is where I lived (about an 45min. south of Mito via expressway). Tsukuba is one of Japans fastest growing cities. When I lived there from 2001-2003 the population increased by about 25% (150000-200000 approx.). This is mainly due to the new express train that gets you to Tokyo in under an hour and also being able to relax and enjoy the fresh air that country living has to offer. OH! BTW...

People that live in the Kanto area tend to refer it (the prefecture) as Ibaraki. But for everyone that lives outside of the area it is commonly refered to as Ibaragi. Go figure. Rolling Eyes

I've been to Mito and it seemed like a fairly good place. It's small but the people are reasonably friendly and there's an interesting foreigner population.

Hey!
I lived in Moriya-shi, Ibaraki for 2 1/2yrs. It wasn't all that bad. Tokyo was only a 35-45 min bus ride depending on the stop or just over an hour on the train(again depending on where you are!!) IF you like movies and are close to either town... IWAI(few screens) or TSUKUBA have good theatres. I recommend the late show or ladies day because it's much cheaper!

I am sure you will be fine there!! It's not the most exciting place but like I said, you can access Tokyo very easily! Unfortunately the JOSO line is one of the more expensive train lines in Japan!! so you tend to pay more for going a shorter distance then anywhere else!!!

If you end up in Moriya or near there, let me know and I can see if the people I know can help you out( I don't live there anymore but I am still in Japan!)!! Very Happy

Ya, the Jo SLOW line is the pitts!

370 Yen for seven stops from Moriya to Toride! 270 Yen for 4 stops to Shin Toride!

However, the Tsukuba Express is coming in August!

30 mins to Akihabara Tokyo from Moriya and only 800 Yen.

WOW, that's nice!! considering even just the regular train is 1200yen!! guess I moved too soon!! hahaha

Getting to Tsukuba was/is a pain if you didn't/don't have a car!
It up and running in August?? I thought it was in Oct!! maybe they are ahead of schedule!! that's nice!!
