I simply wouldn't have any kind of relationship at all with my Dad, my brother and probably half of all of my friends were it not for that fateful day Sir Arthur Football first considered kicking a round ball into an onion bag. Discussing football is my conversational lifeblood, my default position and my sole means of relating to most of the people I meet. I can't imagine it will be too controversial a topic of conversation in South America either. Ask them about Maradona, hand of God, Diego Simeone, David Beckham, effigies in East London, 4 years later, penalty, out in the first round, Batistuta in tears, hahahahahahaha take that you cheating bunch of fuckers. Sorry, ran away with myself there but don't let that stop you from raising it.

No no no no no no no no no sadken!!!! Don't even think about talking about football out here in argieland unless you want to hear exactly the same rubbish over and over and over and over and over again (the dirty cheat didn't cheat because he didn't get caught, it's just part of the game-also part of the reason why such an amazing country is in such a stupidly bad way and will probably never get out of its cycle of boom and bust).

I've given up even responding when someone mentions the fat waste of space (on your left)...'Y Maradona...?' "sorry, i don't speak spanish anymore...'

Alex, i had a 2 hour conversation class yesterday (i barely said anything), just by mentioning the word 'Corruption'...now that's something they know about.

Or you could always start a sentence with; "OK, the Falkland Islands...how about we play you for them?" Although if you believe the old adage that 'football is war' then we'd probably take out some of their subs before they joined the field of play... Shocked

Lordy, the avatars seem to be growing like huge big monster thingies!
Moonraven, there's nothing wrong with the first kiss idea. It doesn't matter if you discuss something as harmless as that in different countries with different cultures and religious beliefs. Even if it turns faces red and doesn't produce much conversation directly, it'll probably lead onto something that will.
Here's an idea - ask your students to choose five countries they'd like to nuke and why. Haven't tried it myself, as I just thought it up, but it's bound to get them chattering away.

Tonight were playing "who gets the heart?" - its a bit less, um, negative.

I like the "corruption" idea!
