GRAB IT!!!! (assuming the rest of the package is good)
6000 is great pay for a Dalian university. Most of the unis I talked to there were in the 2500-3500 range, if you can believe that. You're getting the same wage and weekly load you'd get in some of the chain English mills there, teaching 8-year-olds to mouth "I like eat hamboorger!" all weekend.
And Dalian is a wonderful, wonderful town. If you cant live in the Greater Shanghai area, Dalian is easily the next best choice. 6000 RMB is not princely but it's easily adequate there unless prices have seriously inflated over the last year.
I am intensely jealous and in total awe of your negotiating skills, ya old smoothie ya.

Go for it. Dalian is lively, although I found the development zone (KaiFaQu) north of the city to be even better. And 6,000 is d--n good for a uni there, although an Aussie friend with many years' experience in China is making 8,000RMB a month plus housing and the usual perks there (and another teacher made 10,000 w/out the perks teaching college students 16 hrs/wk) in Dalian (I know both the teacher and school director quite well).
Many of the Dalian teachers supplement their wallets with private tutoring or other side jobs. An American there without a degree was making more than 5,000 a week (yes, a week! I watched him count the money) until he burned out. Winters are too cold, though. And you may find some of the rich female students seeking private tutoring to be a little too liberal in defining homework. |

That is a very good deal if they include the housing. You probably don't want to tell us, but what University in Dalian is this? Is the University in Dalian or is the campus outside the city, perhaps in Lushun or somewhere else outside the the city? I thought that perhaps, since they are offering this deal you might not be teaching directly in the city of Dalian. |

Correction:
6000 RMB for 20 hours/week is BETTER than the local chain English mill, who pays the same money or less for 25/week regular term, 30/week intensive. Definitely take it.

6000 in Dalian for a university? Must be the private translation college in Kaifaqu. The public universities all pay low in Liaoning as the Liaoning government scale is low. If I had an offer for 6000 and the regular perks in Kaifaqu or Dalian city itself a week ago, I would have been gone. Signed on in Shenyang for another year this week.
I Taught in Kaifaqu at a private school for 6000 last year and hated the job but loved the city. Too cold?? Kaifaqu was never really cold or hot. Really a nice climate. |

Hi Forum,
I've been offered a university job in Dalian: 6000RMB every month for twenty lessons each week. They originally offered 5000RMB for twenty-five lessons each week, but I got them to match my salary in Zhejiang.
I know a bit about Dalian, I was there briefly on route from Korea to Haerbin, but I'm not aware of what a sensible salary is in that city.
Thanks for any advice from those that have been there, done it and bought the t-shirt.

hmmm....6,000 kwai. That's not bad, that works out to be 24,000 a month which should be enough for Dalian. |

Bertrand's joke about 6000 a week [the pinyin is actually "kuai", but I know without tones he can't read it] would be mildly amusing if he hadn't used it on another current thread. Inhabitants of Hong Kong and Taiwan have long looked down on the mainland as the home of their backward, backwoods, six toed cousins, without really reflecting on the reasons for their own prosperity. As China's economic growth continues,[8% p.a. at least since I first came here], their own lacklustre economies should give them reason to change that attitude. Also, it's hardly realistic to judge mainland salaries in comparison with HK which, for all its attractions, has a Western cost of living. And as for housing....!!!
6000 a month for those hours is a good deal anywhere in China- for now. |
