Well after the new mayor, the schools didn't close when they should have -- there was a blizzard. A 2nd grader died while walking home, so the next time there was reason to call off school, he did. I was snowed in my house for 5 days.

Yes, the Kazaks and the Turks truly are brothers... Although I have heard that cold water would give you a bad sore throat, I didn't know it would outright kill you! And if you drink water with a meal, it will make you gain weight too...

What about public transportation in Turkey in the summer? In Central Asia, it can be 40 degrees outside, 60 degrees inside but if there is a baby or grandmother on board, all - ALL windows must be closed...

Public transport sucks in the summer. You will get ill if there is a window open on the bus/dolmuş so they are all closed. It can also get a bit smelly.

I had the opposite problem last summer in Antalya- every minibus or coach I took had the AC on AND the front door wide open. Tried to explain to the driver that the hot air rushing in the open door made the AC pretty useless but to no avail. Not a freak one-off...happened at least 3 times

it is probably something about not getting sick - when you have the air on, you must have some source of heat as well... cold air and water lead to sore throats you know!

Actually, I've read that AC does tend to make people ill because usually it is set too low and then when they go out into the heat, their body has a hard time adjusting. Also, there is fungus in the mechanism and that causes some people to get ill.

notice i don't say to get sick anymore! learned that early on...

I will admit, after having suffered through my first AC-less summer a few years ago, I now have an aversion to the units. I hate to drive with air blowing in my face and am a social outcast in America because of it... I miss hot tea in hot weather, but then I do still drink iced tea in the winter at times... I am a confused woman!
