hello

i am leaving japan soon, and i was wondering if i can just show up and close my bank account? it seems like i would be able to, but sometimes japan throws me for a loop with all the excessive paper work and red tape around similiar situations. also, aside from a money order that would take 3 weeks, does anybody have any suggestions on how i can take around $5000 CDN back home with me? it seems like the only way i can think of is carrying the cash. seems a bit risky.

Wire the money with Lloyds, takes 1-2 days.

You could get an international bank card, then take the cash out in your own country. If you're with SMBC they should do it for you, they did it for me, it was a piece of cake.

I lost my bank card once. So I asked for a replacement card. They said it wuld take two weeks and require 2 forms of ID and a confirmation of address. As I was moving house anyway, I then said, ok, can I close my account instead. Same day, got my money as cash, and I only needed passport.

Lloyds if you have it set up. UFJ has a system, but it costs 4500 yen. Postal money order, but takes around two weeks.

I'd carry cash. You must be used to carrying around quite a bit of money in Japan. Just put it in a money belt or your wallet, and head straight for the bank when you return. I think you're allowed to take under $10,000 without having to declare anything.
